About this listen

The safest place they know is about to become the most dangerous… Marcella's husband, Quinn "Black Eagle" Hollister, severed ties to his family and friends on the Seneca reservation years ago. He rarely mentions his past-until his young cousin Kitty collapses on the couple's doorstep in the dead of a rainswept night. After two Seneca men break into their home with intent to kill, the Hollisters flee with the mute and injured girl to Tall Pines, their cabin in the Adirondacks. Marcella, unable to bear a child of her own, unleashes her motherly instincts caring for Kitty. As the girl slowly recovers, they start to piece together who wants them dead, and why. But their pursuers are canny and relentless. The next attack drives the trio from the sanctuary of Tall Pines, deep into the mountain wilderness. In spite of their best efforts, the unthinkable happens and Kitty is kidnapped. Marcella and Quinn track her back to Tall Pines - where they find themselves facing an army of murderous Seneca who'll stop at nothing to protect their dark secret.

Good mystery

I enjoyed this book but I'm sure I would have liked it even more if I had listened to the first two in this series. That being said, it is still good without reading the first two. I liked the characters, their relationships and way they all cared about each other while trying to figure out the mystery. It sucked me in and made me want to listen and find out what really happened. The references to essential oils and their uses was also interesting. I would have liked a little more discussion about other Native American practices and beliefs but perhaps I could find it in the other books in this series.I may have to go back and take a look at book one and two. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Santuary,Book3

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really.I'm not a reader of romance novels. There was too much of that for me.Also the whole story w/it's magical oils being the solution to everything was a bit much.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Yay,it's over!

Did Sanctuary inspire you to do anything?

no

Any additional comments?

This book was ok,but not really my genre. The main character was ok,sometimes. The belief in so many magical items was overwhelming to me.There was action and romance thruout. The male 'voice' the Narrator did for Quinn seemed stereotypical and without feeling. She was good for the female voices,if a tad TOO emotional.

Good suspense

A past he does not share, until the past comes to their doorstep. They flee to the mountains and Marcella takes her under her wings. The Seneca are after them, good audio brought the story to life. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Love the Tall Pines Mysteries!

This is the third installment in the Tall Pines Mystery series. I have read (and loved) the first book and I'm running out to find the second book.

The story telling in this series is exceptional. You are drawn in deeply to a multifaceted mystery at the same time you find yourself invested in the lives of the characters. There is wit and charm in these flawed but loveable characters.

Reading these books is fulfilling because just when you think you're at the end or the place where many authors would leaving you hanging because the mystery is solved, Lazar keeps going to finish the stories of the characters. A follow up on how they are after the out come and hint of what is to come next for them. These stories are as much about the people and their relationships as they are about the mysteries.

The narrator did a fantastic job of bring the characters, suspense and emotions come alive in this story. I look forward to listening to more of her work.

There are two reasons I couldn't give this book five stars. They are petty reasons but I feel that I need to be consistent. The first was that my very favourite character, Ruby, was hardly heard from and she was most who I wanted to hear from where I pick up this book. The second reason was the nature of the crime. I know that crimes are not sweetness and light and buy reading mysteries and crime fiction I have to expect to come across the gritty but that is how I feel.

If I reread this book it would be for there characters not the crime where as I have reread For The Birds and it was for both.

okay

This was the third in the Tall Pines Mystery. I was able to follow along okay even though I did not read the others in the series.

I enjoyed this book. I did think essential oils were mentioned too much. It was an good adventure.

The main character, friends, and family members worked together to save Kitty who ended up on their doorstep

Too much product placement - Storyline Good

If you could sum up Sanctuary in three words, what would they be?

I sell multi-level

Would you be willing to try another book from Aaron Paul Lazar? Why or why not?

I will not give up on Aaron's books. I think I will try a different series that he writes. His writing is very good. This storyline is good. The working in of the Native American aspect is done well. I actually use Essential Oils myself. I understand the importance of the oils. I like the way the use was written into the story.

However, I was really cringing every time I heard the blatant product placement for Young Living Essential Oils. This book felt like an infomercial for the multi-level product. My opinion is that he should mention the Young Living product once then start using just the words "Essential Oils".

I know that this links back to the second book, but it was really obnoxious.I thought this took away from the beginning of the story. Once I listened past the bombardment of product placement. The story started to become interesting.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene at the river/hot tub where Kitty is humming is a very good chapter. You can almost smell the pine tree and woody smells. Ruby the bird is funny. The Mother-in-Law has some great lines providing great comedic relief.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. However, once they arrive in Tall Pines the story takes off and becomes more interesting.

Love Tall Pines

I have several Aaron Paul Lazar audiobooks in my library and now I’m asking myself what I’m waiting for!

“Sanctuary’ is the third book in the Tall Pines Mystery series, but don’t worry if, like me, you haven’t listened to the previous books. I was able to jump right in. And I do mean jump.

The action begins within the first minutes and the tension carries throughout the suspenseful novel. The heroine in the story is Marcella, and although I normally prefer alternating hero/heroine points-of-view, I was fine with this structure and it worked very well for this story. At one point, Marcella’s husband Quinn goes away for several days and although I enjoyed hearing about which essential oils are good for stress relief, I would have loved to be with Quinn as he made his discoveries. The summary discussion with Marcella was adequate, but I missed the immediacy. But this is a small issue and the rest of the book more than makes up for this issue.

Lazar has a deft hand in providing just enough clues, but when the final truth was revealed, I was surprised. And the ending? I might have gotten a little teary, even though it was definitely a happy ending.

Although I liked Marcella and her intense love-filled and passion-fueled relationship with Quinn, it was Kitty who fascinated me. I might resemble Marcella more (40s, no kids), but Kitty’s odd mix of vulnerability and strength spoke to me.

There are mystical elements in the book, and whether or not a listener believes in such things, they are creative and engaging. Finally, I feel much more informed about the healing power of essential oils.

Gwendolyn Druyor is a new narrator to me, but she was perfect for the novel. She embodies Marcella while handling Quinn and the other male voices deftly. She also brought Kitty to life, even though the girl couldn’t speak. I will definitely be looking for more books narrated by her.

This is a great suspenseful read with a kick-butt heroine! (Actually, it has several strong women, which was awesome…)

Oh, and pistol-packing Thelma? I adored Marcella’s mother.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and can recommend it.

Good mystery

Would you try another book from Aaron Paul Lazar and/or Gwendolyn Druyor?

Yes, this is my first time reading a book by Mr. Lazar. So that is saying a lot especially reading Book 3 without reading the first 2 books.

Would you ever listen to anything by Aaron Paul Lazar again?

Absolutely.

Any additional comments?

I am a big fan of the show Longmire on Netflix which is rich in Native American folklore and the spirit world. So when I was got this book I was really excited because I was expecting to get a dose of Native American legends and their spiritual world. Well, there was some mentioned of it but not enough. I wish there was more of it but instead the essential oils was mentioned more.

I knew that I was reading book 3 out of order and did not expected to know to much about the characters. I think it would have been beneficial to the reader if Mr. Lazar had written a prologue or something to give reader such as myself some frame reference the relation between the characters. I guess it's not fair for me to criticize this part but I was told that I did not need to read the first 2 books to follow the story. And this is true but for me to stay immerse in the story telling I need to understand the dynamic between the different characters. But throughout the whole story I kept wondering how these character knew each other and how they interacted in the previous 2 books. Again that is not the authors fault but mine for not reading the first 2 books. With that said, I will definitely go back and read the first 2 books to fully appreciate this one.
