About this listen

Get ready for one of America's great untold stories: the true saga of the Louvin Brothers, a mid-century Southern gothic Cain and Abel and one of the greatest country duos of all time.

The beautiful and tragic saga of the Louvin Brothers-one of the most legendary country duos of all time - is one of America's great untold stories. Charlie Louvin was a good, God-fearing, churchgoing singer, but his brother, Ira, had the devil in him and was known for smashing his mandolin to splinters onstage, cussing out Elvis Presley, and trying to strangle his third wife with a telephone cord.

The Los Angeles Times called them "the most influential harmony team in the history of country music," but Emmylou Harris may have hit closer to the heart of the matter, saying "there was something scary and washed in the blood about the sound of the Louvin Brothers." For fans of Johnny Cash's irresistible autobiography and Merle Haggard's My House of Memories, no country music library will be complete without this raw and powerful story of the duo that everyone from Dolly Parton to Gram Parsons described as their favorites: the Louvin Brothers.

Very Interesting

If you have any interest in Country Music this is for you. I was very surprised with what I thought was a typical fan book. Not so, it is much more than that. Worth your time and money.

Pure country gold

Found this book from the Louvins episode of Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast.

What a tremendous story, easy to listen to. I appreciate the way old folks like that spoke, and this really captures that purely.

It is sad...

a real story of country music and the Louvin Brothers. it is sad.
the story moves quick and easy to follow. As one who listens as they drive the chapters are short so I can listen to one as I go to work. I am just sad it was quick will listen again for sure.

An intimate and raw look at talented dysfunction

What a story. I'm a recent convert to the Louvin Brothers' music, and this is a perfect overview. This amazing audiobook really lets you feel what Charlie and Ira went through as they pursued their musical dreams while also trying to stay one step ahead of Ira's demons. The narration is excellent, and truly makes you feel like you're hanging out on the front porch with Charlie, listening to him tell gripping stories about the past.

Beware raunchy language

I’m sure the language used is realistic for the times and situation, but just be aware that the language in this book is a patois of four letter words, including a particular word exceedingly offensive to women. Narrator is outstanding.
