Publisher's summary

A day at the spa ends in death. I’m the only one who knows the truth....

Charles Carver destroyed my life. He’s the savage drug lord whose experimental concoction killed my brother and colleague. I vow to hunt him down and expose him for the criminal he is.

After the brutal massacre at Selas Harbor two years ago, his crime empire vanished. I’m determined to find him.

As an investigative journalist, it’s my job to seek answers. As a sister, it’s my personal mission to seek justice.

I’m called on assignment to a wellness spa where there has been a suspicious death. The toxicology report matches the signature compounds of Carver’s experimental drug.

I’m getting closer to tracking him down. I can feel it in my bones. Nothing can stop me now from revealing the truth before it’s too late. Before there are more victims.

I’ll do anything to stop his evil masterminded plan—even if it means risking my own life.

Short Medical Thriller

This was my first A.J. Faris's book. This short novella is well written, fast paced, and captivating. The storyline is intriguing, and suspenseful. This is an interesting, and entertaining medical thriller. Skye Alley did a good job bringing this story to life. #StoryOrigin

Fast paced thriller

This is a very fast paced and short book. It's very suspenseful and creepy. It leaves you on the edge of your seat. Amelia is trying to uncover a plot at a wellness center and poses as a reporter. Amelia is committed to her cause because she knew people that died at this center. Dr. Charles is so over the top crazy, and his followers, you don't think Amelia is going to be able to escape. This welness center is more like a brainwashing cult. Dr. Charles has a way of manipulating the mind, where you don't know who's version of events to believe. Eventually the full truth comes out, I think 😉.

Thrilling Short Story

This was my first experience with A J Faris' work, and it was entertaining. Amelia vowed to find and expose Charles Carver whose experimental drug killed her brother and colleague. There were some tense moments. The characters of Charles Carver and his group were scary as they were depicted as zealots that were blind to their treatment of others. Amelia was curious, courageous, and loyal. Because the story was short, the ending seemed too rushed to me. Skye Alley's narration was fine. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Creepy violence.

A short, creepy, twisted listen. Amelia is such a brave dedicated girl. I couldn't fathom how she would get out of this alive. I couldn't put it down. I listened through the night. So glad it was fairly short.
I got the feeling there was a previous book that I have not read. But alot was revealed in this book.
4 stars for the narrator, too. She did a good job with the creepy violence.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

VERY Robin Cook 🩺

This seems to be part of a series and I’ve sadly missed the first part, “Into the Dark”.

Very well-done, VERY Robin Cook. If you like medical thrillers, this is your book.

I’d be happy to read the previous book as well as any remaining.

Fun-ish story, poor audio quality.

A quick little conspiracy / medical thriller story—the writing isn’t bad, the female lead is likable and the antagonists were fun to hate. A quick listen that I can use to entertain myself during unsavory tasks. Though, I strongly recommend any format other than audio, if you’re picky about things like tone, sound quality and performance.

Overall: it was okay. 3 stars.

🦠 Horror /
☣️ psychological thriller vibes
🦠 Conspiracy, betrayal, corruption.
☣️ Evil scientists.
🦠 Nosy journalist.
☣️ Experimentation … on living people.

Audio:
The narration is fairly bad—honestly, from the sound of it, I thought it had to be AI, but a person seems to be credited with doing it. It’s odd, the pitch sorta just smoothly dips up and down throughout the entire book—making it sound very much like my first Apple computer’s text-to-speech voice back in 1994-ish. Other than that, it’s emotionless, dull, detached. Not performed, just dictated. This style isn’t for me.

The overall sound quality has some issues; it isn’t the perfect, crisp, clear production you get when a professional narrator or producer is used and the volume dips at times.

2 stars on this front.

Suspense and Thrills in this Short Book

I thoroughly enjoyed this short audiobook. I have not read the previous book in the series, Into the Dark, and now I want to, which is a testimony unto itself. I don't feel the book lost any momentum or suspense even without foreknowledge of the characters or plot. The author did a great job building suspense and adding twists and turns. Possible Spoiler Alert: There were two potential twists at the end of the book that could have been explored had the book been a bit longer. One was more of a fake out. The other was the amount of time Amelia was held captive. It was alluded to but not explored. Could have led down an interesting path. It didn't detract from my overall enjoyment, however. Perhaps I just didn't want the story to end. The narrator did a fine job and kept me in the story. So, mission accomplished. Will put this author on my list.

Intense Mystery Thriller

An intense hunt for a brutal drug lord leads Amelia down a rabbit hole. Intent upon finding Charles Carver, the killer of those she loved, leads her to confront him. As a reporter, her hunt takes her to a ritzy high-society spa. What she discovers there is not only dangerous and unstable but maybe her undoing!

The author, A J Faris, builds a strong foundation for a deadly thriller that will leave the listener wide-eyed and wanting more. The solid foundation captivates the listener with vivid imagery and well-developed characters. It is a short listen so when it ended, it was a bit abrupt for me. The plot twists towards the end could have been expanded upon a bit more to bring the book to a more intense thrill and a more satisfying ending.

The narrator, Skye Alley, captured the essence of each character and projected their persona distinctly. Alley was efficient in presenting the intense and suspenseful story authentically and maintained its appropriate level throughout the book.

Personally, I would have enjoyed a much less abrupt ending but it did leave me wanting to hear more!

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
