About this listen

The year is 1968. After spending the first half of summer vacation driving her Italian family crazy with her fake southern accent, 10-year-old A.J. finds a soul mate on the other side of the island to divert her attention.

She is intrigued to learn that Danny shares her same burning desire to know God and realizes that few people her age think as deeply as the two of them do. However, the depth of their newfound faith and friendship is soon tested when Danny's father betrays his wife.

Set in a simpler time, Saving Sailor is a heartwarming tale of how hearts can change and relationships can be restored with God's help.

Fantastic Story! Great for all Ages

Saving Sailor is a novel by Renee Riva. This is the story of A.J. Degulio and is set in the summer of 1968. This is a story for all ages that tells about A.J.’s summer when she is turning 10. Her father is a park ranger at Indian Lake, Idaho, where the family lives on the island. Her large Italian, Roman Catholic family is a cast of characters that are truly entertaining.

The story truly holds the listener’s attention. Her mother Sophia pretends to be Sophia Loren. A.J. is unique in that she speaks with a fake southern accent and is enamored with all things southern. She meets her soul mate this summer. A young fellow named Danny. They are two young people that are both old souls. They feel and share their faith in God, cutting through the problems of doctrines of their differing faiths.

The narration is provided by Silvia Durham. Ms. Durham gave a strong skilled vocal performance to this audio production. The production quality of this audiobook is also the highest quality. I heard no problems during the entire performance. There were not any detectable flaws that I was able to hear during the entire performance such as loops, breaks, or buzzing. The production was crisp and clear. christianaudio.com delivered an excellent audiobook production. I highly recommend this audiobook. Great Read

Saving Sailor: A Quirky Girl, A Faithful Dog, and One Unforgettable Summer (A.J., #1) was another great read by Renee Riva. A.J. has spent her 1968 summer vacation driving her Italian family crazy with her fake southern accent. She finds Danny and A.J. have strong faith and desire to know God. They grow closer and their faith is tested when Danny's father betrays his wife. This was another fun read by Renee Riva.

1968 . . . a Girl, a Dog, and Faith like a Child

The summer of 1968, A.J. Degulio is turning ten years old . . . not quite sure she likes being ten, but having no choice in the matter, she spends her summer at Indian Lake, Idaho, where her dad is the park ranger . . . a large Italian Catholic family . . . quirky, funny, and close, they will crack you up with their antics . . . told in the BEST fake southern accent from A.J.'s (Angelina Juliana) perspective . . . and what a simple, but wise perspective it is . . . her mama, Sophia, relishes in pretending to be THE Sophia (Loren) and regularly goes into town impersonating the actress . . . her daddy, Sonny, keeps them all laughing . . . with four siblings, A.J. has her work cut out for her, especially with her older sister, Adriana falling in love with one boy after the other, and having no time whatsoever for A.J.'s antics . . . and in the middle of their idyllic summer, the Morgan family comes to the lake . . . A.J. meets Danny and they become fast friends . . . sharing all their thoughts, and their faith . . . and in the midst of a terrible family crisis, A.J. and Danny find solace in the God of all creation . . . not the Baptist or Catholic God, but THE ALPHA AND OMEGA, the beginning and the end, the Comforter . . . it is so amazing how children can cut through the legalism, the junk that us adults cling to and allow to divide us . . . A.J.'s conversation with Danny's father . . . well, it was exactly what all us Christians are called to do, but seldom do . . . this book is amazingly simple, yet it reaches the depths of one's heart in ways that are almost unfathomable . . . not just a book for youth . . . maybe especially a book for us older folks who THINK we've got it figured out . . . BRAVO, Renee Riva!

one of my favorites!

I have read this book 3 times, once aloud to my family. I was hesitant to have someone else read it, but Sylvia did a great job and really made it come alive. This will always be a favorite!
