About this listen

Dan Gemeinhart brings his signature blend of action, heart, and beautiful writing to a tale of misfits struggling to survive.

Jonathan Grisby is the newest arrival at the Slabhenge Reformatory School for Troubled Boys - an ancient, crumbling fortress of gray stone rising up from the ocean. It is dark, damp, and dismal. And it is just the place Jonathan figures he deserves.

Because Jonathan has done something terrible. And he's willing to accept whatever punishment he has coming.

Just as he's getting used to his new situation, however, a freak accident leaves the troubled boys of Slabhenge without any adult supervision. Suddenly the kids are free, with an entire island to themselves. But freedom brings unexpected danger. And if Jonathan can't come to terms with the sins of his past and lead his new friends to safety then every boy on the island is doomed.

Dan Gemeinhart's most gripping novel yet, this is a tale of misfits and outcasts at odds and in peril and a redemption story that shines a light on dark truths to reveal that the strongest prisons of all are the ones we build for ourselves.

Vivid Writing

This story kept me turning the pages. I did not know what to expect but as I read, The story just consumed me. As a librarian myself, I loved the Old Librarian character tucked away in the castle. A Great Read!!

Entertaining, But a Mild version of Flies

This , I can see, would be a great introduction to the classic, Lord of the Flies. I thought that just after Jonathan's first night. Low and Behold, it is actually mentioned towards the end of the 3rd of the book. The Librarian is the best character, the only one not insane or delusional. A nice read for 6th grade and up boys

the best

it is a sad emotional story and adventurous reminder that people who've done stuff in the past doesn't mean that that makes them bad people in the future

Dan Gemeinhart + MacLeod Andrews = Well Done

I have enjoyed all of Gemeinhart's books so far, and Scar Island again shows how he really understands his middle grade audience and their collective love of lots of action and drama with some humor sprinkled in. In this story, the main character has massive inner and outer conflicts, builds deep friendships, and overcomes big obstacles to survive. When you add the crazy-talented Andrews as the reader, you get a gripping tale indeed. My fifth graders love this author and his other books, and I know they'll just eat up Scar Island as well.

Perfect book for Middle School Kiddos

The narrator captured the main charater's voice! This book was an adventurous tale with intersting characters and situations. The "forgotten librarian" was an interesting twist on a classic trope! Loved the nods to classic literature from the author. I finished in 2 days. It was a nail-biter for sure!
