About this listen

"It is said that unto everything there is a season...these are the stories of a group of survivors during the season of the dead."

Four individuals fight to survive as the zombie apocalypse crashes over the world in a wave of terror and destruction. Color, creed, and social standing mean nothing as the virus infects millions across the planet.

Sharon: a zoologist from Nebraska, USA, has worked with the virus, and has seen the effects on the human mind. She knows more about the virus than nearly anybody alive, and far more than she wants to. Gerry: from Ontario, Canada, he gets his first taste of the virus from inside a prison cell. Locked up after an anti-government riot, his prison guard transforms before his eyes into a flesh craving zombie. Lucia: a chemist from Pittsburgh, USA, flees from a furry convention dressed as a giant squirrel, and escapes from the city in a Fed-Ex van. She's a girl who knows when to run and when to fight. Paul: thinks he can sit out the apocalypse in his apartment block in Dublin, Ireland, until the virus comes to visit, bursting his bubble and leaving him with no choice but to face reality or perish.

All four begin perilous journeys in mind and body as they face daily trials to survive: Four threads, four different parts of the world, one apocalypse!

So many apoc books do this one thing..

All in all a good zombie book!
The separate stories weave together fine, though I sometimes lost who we are following from time to time. Fortunately, all the main characters were asexual and could, therefore, focus completely on survival.

Spoiler: So many of these apoc storylines include some evil govt agency trying to hunt people down to shut them up AFTER the world has already ended. It doesn’t matter at that point — no more cops, courts, or newspapers. Why waste precious resources and manpower tying up looses ends when nothing it tied up anymore..

Ordinary citizens fight the apocalypse.

Four individual survivors of the zombie apocalypse tell their stories. Well-developed characters and plausible events caused me to give this story a 5-star rating. There was a slight problem with performance. The narrator was very good, but this book would have been better if done by multiple narrators. The story is told from the first-person viewpoints of four characters, two of whom are female. There should have been one narrator for each character, or at least one male and one female narrator for the male and female characters. That is why I did not give an overall 5-star rating.

fast-paced & action-packed...a good listen

Any additional comments?

i really liked this book! it is fast-paced and action-packed with the right amount of character development. there are 4 story lines, and each one is quite good. it is not hard to follow b/c the switch from one story line to another is prefaced by the character's name and location.

you definitely won't get bored with this book. if anything, there were times when i wished the author slowed down and expounded more, e.g. when some of the story lines start to merge. parts of it seemed a little rushed, but i still felt the rush of excitement as they met.

after 15 minutes, i was totally engrossed in the story and didn't want to stop listening. this is a good book for zombie newbies and old hats like me.

Great zombie story!

I was a little hesitant when I heard it was 4 separate story lines but I'm really glad that I didn't let that stop me from getting this book. The story starts out as 4 different character perspectives but eventually all of the story lines come together. I can't wait until the next book comes out!

Zombie Stories are all looking for something extra

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It would be a good introduction to the genre for someone who had never really read or listened to the genre before

What was one of the most memorable moments of Season of the Dead?

The start of the outbreak and the introduction of one of the two main characters is amusing and made me chuckle some what!

Which character – as performed by Meral Mathews – was your favorite?

Beyond any doubt the squirrel... yes I said squirrel! But the Irish chap was a close second

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Zombies versus the squirrel

Any additional comments?

It seems all zombie books are trying to outdo one another for the strange factor. Recently I read one with Nazi's, Rednecks, a family of Apes and now this a person dressed as a squirrel!

A New Favorite

What made the experience of listening to Season of the Dead the most enjoyable?

Compared to so many other Zombpacolypse books, this one had a unique start from very different perspectives. In a way it reminded me of World War Z. Numerous points of view are, to me, when well written, great fodder for a Zombie book.

What other book might you compare Season of the Dead to and why?

World War Z and Alaskan Undead Apocalypse

Easily my favorite listen so far!

Would you consider the audio edition of Season of the Dead to be better than the print version?

This is truly a five star rating, the most expertly written, paced, developed and narrated selection in my library. I enjoy apocalyptic survival stories with, until this selection, Day by Day as my personal favorite. Use a credit and enjoy!

Guns

When writing a book in which firearms are a key component, learn about them. Learn about their capabilities and limitations. Ensure the narrator learn nomenclature as well..

Narration killed this one

I could not get past the absolute monotone voice of the main narrator... it was terrible to listen to, and he made zero effort to use different tones for different characters so the whole book is a blur.

The actual story may have been okay, had I been able to better follow with better narration.
