About this listen

For fans of Maggie Stiefvater and Laini Taylor, a perfect storm lies ahead in this riveting fantasy duology opener from award-winning author Elle Cosimano.

One cold, crisp night, Jack Sommers was faced with a choice - live forever according to the ancient, magical rules of Gaia, or die.

Jack chose to live, and in exchange, he became a Winter - an immortal physical embodiment of the season on Earth. Every year, he must hunt the Season who comes before him. Summer kills Spring. Autumn kills Summer. Winter kills Autumn. And Spring kills Winter.

Jack and Fleur, a Winter and a Spring, fall for each other against all odds. To be together, they’ll have to escape the cycle that’s been forcing them apart. But their creator won’t let them go without a fight.

Clever premise and a quick read

I was really intrigued by the concept of seasons personified. The story started OK, fizzled a bit in the middle, and the ending was decent (albeit a bit cheesy). Top books? No. Interesting enough to keep my interest? I suppose - 7/10

Excellent story

This was a very different story about time and the seasons. It was very clever and the characters were well developed. There was a lot of action and young love interests. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Incredibly Entertaining

I truly enjoyed this book and I'm glad I got this on a whim. I was immediately hooked and couldn't wait to listen at night before bed. The love story is sweet and character development was well paced. While I was hoping for a slightly more passionate romance, (ex. court of thorns series), I still can't wait to start the next book.

Interesting take

This was an interesting take on the seasons as well as immortality.
The 2 narrators were great.

Passage of Time is Weird

Slightly disappointed with the ending. But nothing I didn't expected. The pacing of this book is strange. More than once it skipped ahead several months. I suppose it isn't necessary to know what happens between those points, but it would seem that the characters are idle during those times and it makes no sense to the story. It's also very slow. Certain details are added unnecessarily, almost as if the author wanted to add time to a book that would have otherwise been better without it.

A Fresh, Engaging Story

This book was such a great surprise. I grabbed it on a whim because of the cover and sample, and I was not disappointed.

The premise was so fun and creative. Really fresh, and yet it hit all the expectations of the genre. Clean, crisp writing. Interesting characters (loved Amber and Chill so much). All in all, a super satisfying read. On to book 2.

Over all I loved this book

This book is very good! I honestly loved it right up until the last 3 minutes. The ending is a little lack luster but I’d still recommend it!

unique and good

well written and a fresh idea in the magic sci fi world. I liked the duo narratoring and between 2 characters perspectives throughout the book.

New take, interesting premise

Really enjoyed this idea of Seasons and forbidden love. A refreshing take for concepts and a genre that is hard to find something new and original.

As an adult who enjoys reading YA fantasy and science fiction, it can get thoroughly nauseating when the romance overtakes a promising story. This is finally YA story that has “coupling” built right into the plot, but it doesn’t get tooo lovesick or over-bearing. I haven’t read the sequel so it could get worse, but this was a strong start for a series!!

Mostly Liked

This was a fun listen. An original idea. There are holes in the continuity which damages character development and world building. Some things seemed rushed. Some things not explained. Too much time spent on this and not enough on that. The narrators were great choices. They saved the booked and gave it life. I’m glad the author didn’t dwell on the spicier passages. It was a light touch and just enough to qualify as a YA romance. Jack and Fleur are no where near Twilight or Titanic romance level, but I can see where they could have been. I’m more interested in Julio and Amber and Chill and Poppy so I hope the next book tells a little more of their stories. It’s a good pass-the-time kind of listen. It doesn’t go too deep, so you don’t have to listen real hard.
