About this listen

Powerhouse adult fantasy author R. A. Salvatore and Erika Lewis deliver a sweeping, action-packed, romantic pre-Arthurian tale of the origins of magic (and Merlin), perfect for fans of Falling Kingdoms and Seraphina.

Magic needs a spark.

And Maggie’s powers are especially fickle. With no one to help her learn to control her magic, the life debt that she owes stretches eternally over her head, with no way to repay it.

Until she meets Griffin, the king’s champion, infamous for hunting down the draignochs that plague their kingdom.

Neither has any idea of the destiny that they both carry, or that their meeting will set off a chain of events that will alter every aspect of the life they know - and all of history thereafter.

This epic, romantic tale will enchant listeners and draw them into a thrilling world of star-crossed lovers, magic, destiny, and the paths we choose.

Excellent story line. Really hoping this will be a series. Then to pair John York & Aline Stokes as narrators, I really enjoyed them both. I'm no expert with accents, I really enjoyed them! They made Maggie and Griffin come to life!!!

Loved R A. Salvatore!!

R. A. Salvatore and Erika Lewis teamed up to make for an enjoyable listening experience. While not quite as "adult-y" as most of Salvatore novels, it wasn't without its fair share of court intrigue betrayal and plot twists; especially at the end.

Aline Stokes' and John York performances were well executed with Aline's brogue was so thick that I had to wait for the end of the sentence to put it into context. Still, this wasn't often and I enjoyed listening to her melodic Irish accent. John's performance was well rehearsed good at voicing distinguishing voices for the several male characters.

Surprisingly entertaining

I liked this story. I don’t want to provide any spoilers so I will just say that the ending didn’t seem very believable within the context of the story. In spite of that I still liked the book.

Enjoyable

Story was excellent and very well written. That is, until the end. This story had the makings of an epic adventure that could have done so much more. Listening, I kept checking to see if there were other books and this was a series because there was no way this could be finished in the little time left. Sadly, the ending happened. Very rushed, very much a let down after the wonder world building. Felt like the writers decided they were just done with it and slapped the very predictable ending on and called it day. Very disappointing. Would only recommend borrowing from a library or friend and don't waste your money. It leaves you wanting something you will not get....an engaging, thrilling ending with purpose.

Good but not worth paying for

I wish there were more. I was sucked in within the first 5 minutes. the ending was wild and the performance was amazing.

Great story- ending was rushed.

It’s a bit misleading looking at the synopsis, it had nothing at all to do with Merlin himself. It was apparently about his predecessors.

It was good but…

lack of consistency accents Welch. Scottish. Irish. English. same character... different accents. it was annoying trying to decider who was speaking.

original storytelling

really quick story from beginning to end. the two protagonists worked well together and didn't fall into chapters of boring expected tropes and instead plowed through them to the heart of the story.

definitely recommend!!

thoroughly enjoyed!!

it was pretty good. but I was expecting a lot more from ra Salvatore. this book felt less intricately built and more surface level than anything else I've ever read by him

Pretty good. But I'd expected more
