Publisher's summary
When Seckry was six years old, his father disappeared.
The two of them had spent the afternoon picking berries together in the fields surrounding their village. In Seckry's vague memory, it had been perfect. But the following morning his father was gone, and had taken all traces of his existence with him.
Dreams of that afternoon still plague Seckry's nights. Swimming in and out of his consciousness are images of his father's watch; one that was glowing an eerie green, and inscribed with foreign markings. What had his dad told him about that watch? That if that green glow ever changed to red, it would be the end of the world.
Now fifteen, Seckry is adapting to life in the big city of Skyfall, and it isn't long before he's competing at Friction (the city's most popular e-sport), slurping awe-inspiring multicoloured milkshakes, and getting butterflies on his first date. But when he finds himself in the restricted grounds of the enigmatic Endrin Corporation; the city's sole energy supplier, he finds something cowering in the darkness; something that is about to change his life forever.
A girl.
She has no memory of who she is, where she's from, or why she's there. All she knows is that she's in danger. Seckry grabs one of her frail arms and escapes with her, determined to help her recall her past. But what Seckry uncovers is more disturbing than he could ever have imagined.
Something that stems all the way back to that fateful day nine years ago.
Seckry Sevenstars and the City of the Falling Sky is the first book in a mind-blowing YA sci-fi mystery series that features a main character you can’t help but root for, a group of loveable misfit friends, the coolest video game ever created, evil scientists, a corrupt government, and an epic plot twist that will make your jaw drop.

I guess you could call my latest job interview a success. I got hired, and it's way beyond my wildest dreams. The pay isn't great. And the hours are pretty much 24/7. But there's magic. And a portal to a fantasy world. Those kind of outweigh the negatives. At first, I thought I was just testing the latest VR survival RPG, but I'm starting to think this might not be a game after all. The monsters are definitely life-like and capable of carving me apart on their worst days. But on their best days, I make them mine.

Maxwell Carter works a maintenance job at a government research facility. The research lab he works at has an accident, more energy coming through the wormhole than anticipated, enough to completely rupture the shields that were supposed to contain it until they finished determining how to convert the energy into electricity. Previously harmless animals are changed to nightmare threats and people are dying, seemingly due to incidents related directly to their interests.

Perfect!
What an epic ride. I’ve read these words by Joseph Evans several times before and loved this story each time, but the added layer of Mike Paul’s voice brought it to a new level of realism. I didn’t want to turn it off, and would have sat in a room for 11 hours doing nothing more than listening if I could have. Everything about this audiobook is phenomenal.
Joseph Evans’s story is a huge tapestry of information that gets put down and picked up chapters later as the key to the whole mystery. Its twists and turns are such great surprises and the suspense is enjoyable throughout the whole book.
Mike Paul’s vocal range is great; from the boisterous announcers at the Friction match, to Tenk’s hilarious drunk voice, to Seckry’s mum’s wistful chirping, to Seckry’s own determined tone, Mike Paul brings each character to life with their own unique timbre, accent, and vocal rhythm.
I can’t think of anything I’d more highly recommend than this series, and I’m sure I’ll be reading it again within a year. Can’t wait for book 2. Thank you Joseph and Mike!
