About this listen

Melody Hurst's days as a Southern belle are over. Now she's widowed and alone in the foothills of the Rockies, struggling to make a life in a dangerous world. She's determined to secure a future by marrying - but love is out of the question.

Cole Baywood has turned bounty hunter after serving in the horrors of the Civil War, but the ghosts of the men and women he's killed still haunt him. He's drawn to the beautiful widow trying to seduce him, only the darkness in his soul forces him to reject her. Is it possible that Melody's touch can heal the demons of his past? And how can he convince a woman who has lost so much to risk her heart?

Did I nod off and miss a few chapters?

I felt as if the story was just starting to progress when 'ba-bam' ... it ended. I like books in a series but I generally expect each book to stand on its own. I don't think a reader should have wait to read the next book in the series to achieve closure on the previous one.

The story itself had potential but it just sort of fell flat. Characters and sub-plots were introduced but never fully developed and then there was the abrupt ending.

I thought the narrator was fairly good. I've listened to better readers in the past but I've also listened to many more that were worse. All in all, I would listen to this narrator's work again.

OK, not OK..

I didn't really like this book but I didn't dislike either. I wasn't crazy about Melody until much later on in the story but I liked Cole from the very beginning. Melody was such a coward around Jimmy that I kept thinking "Kill him! KILL HIM!!!!" But she just kept taking his beatings. I liked Annie, though. Jimmy called her a "mute gimp," because of her clubbed foot and the fact that she never spoke to him, but she was more than that. When Melody would have just let Steven die, Annie wouldn't hear of it.

So, here it is, the entire cast of characters: Cole, Melody, Annie, Steven, and Jimmy for a little while.

There was absolutely no sexual tension, no desire, no nothing in this book but then there was a certain kind of sex and a hand job between Cole and Melody, If you know what I mean. He didn't want to make love to her until after they told their family they were getting married. I thought that was kind of stupid, but that's just me.

As to the narration: Cam Drynan was just OK for me. He didn't read with much emotion, the women's voices need serious work, but Steven and Cole's voices were perfect. This is Cam Drynan's ONLY narration so there's nothing to compare any other readings with.
