How is the follower of Jesus to understand the words of the Old Testament? How are those words relevant to the New Covenant he is establishing? What might the words of the Lord’s Prayer have conveyed to his initial followers, and why is that historical information essential to the prayer two millennia later?
In Sermon on the Mount, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine takes a detailed and colorful overview of Matthew 5-7, collectively known as Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. Through Dr. Levine’s engaging method of biblical interpretation, listeners will come away with a solid understanding of the Sermon on the Mount in its full historical and theological context.

The author writes in a warm-hearted, academic approach and the speaker sounds kind and clear. I loved this version of the story from a perspective that is different than what I've known.
The concepts, facts, circumstances and even the dogma is clear. I recommend the book to anyone, and I will listen to it again.
The most important line in the Sermon to me - "Ye Resist Not Evil" is a very complex and advanced teaching. This single teaching is behind major non-violent movements like Gandhi's and Martin Luther King's. In fact, Tolstoy and Gandhi were very close pen pals and Martin Luther King visited Gandhi's relatives at the Tolstoy Farm (yes, Gandhi named the ashrama after Tolstoy) - the Sermon being their common language. They all revered the Sermon on the Mount for this teaching - believing so vividly in expressing emotion, reason and needs that one is willing to be slapped and slapped, again, yet, the truth of what is behind their values (empathy, compassion, and love) kept and keeps them standing with confidence.
A great accompaniment or additional read is Gandhi's biography by Rajmohan Gandhi, Tolstoy's My Religion, and then also The Kingdom of God is Within You.
