About this listen

The Jewish Gospel of John is not, by any standard, another book on Jesus of Nazareth written from a Jewish perspective. It is an invitation to the listener to put aside their traditional understanding of the Gospel of John and to replace it with another one more faithful to the original text perspective. The Jesus that will emerge will provoke you to rethink most of what you knew about this gospel.

The book is a well-rounded, verse-by-verse rethinking of the fourth gospel. Here is the catch: Instead of treating it as if it was written for 21st-century Gentile Christians, the book interprets it as if it was written for the first-century peoples of ancient Israel.

The book proves what Krister Stendahl stated long time ago: "Our vision is often more abstracted by what we think we know than by our lack of knowledge." Other than challenging the long-held interpretations of well-known stories, the author, with the skill of an experienced tour guide, puts us in the place of those who most probably heard this gospel read in the late first century. Such exploration of a variety of important contexts allows us to recover for our generation the true riches of this marvelous Judean gospel.

Insightful

Enjoyed the context, but is this is a veiled attempt to exclude Christian believers who weren't born naturally as Israel? The author acknowledges Christians read John 10:16 (But I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.) to refer to themselves as well, as part of God's flock. The author opines that this particular verse refers to the inclusion of Samaritan Israel, not those not naturally born Israel. The reason why this position isn't compelling: the addition of the non-Jewish believers Jesus refers to seems to conclude the number of the flock over whom He will shepherd. Also, consider this: it would unnatural for a mother who intends to pick up children in different cities to say she will include her children from Philadelphia to be in one household over which she will nurture, while not simultaneously meaning to include all her children as part of the same household. Neither would it serve a purpose to parse them out that way.

Jewish context for Jesus

This book does a great job of helping the reader understand John's message by explaining early CE Jewish contextual issues.

The author uniquely proposes that The Book of John was written with Samaritan readers in mind. The author uses this perspective to justify removing the supposed anti-Semitic sentiment from the book. I had never thought of this perspective before, After reading this book, I prefer the author's perspective.

The narrator is fantastic. He has just enough accent to keep it interesting. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Revelatory work

May it truly bring about the reform hoped by author, this is an amazing eye-opening work for Christians, especially those Christians in the Western World who are trying to truly understand the context with which the New Testament and the Old Testament were written, those hoping to gain a greater contextual understanding of God's word and his Revelation to mankind.
