Excellent

Loved it. Janny Wurts is a powerful writer.
She continued an amazing story, and world, created by Raymond E. Fiest Jr.

These three books about Mara are my all time favorites!!
I’ve read and listened to them many times and they are always as delicious as they were the first time I read them

Gripping

This book just grips you and pulls you right into the book. I have loved this book for years and now to hear it as an audiobook is so fulfilling. The only thing that could have made it even better would be to either have a male voice for the men or even better a full cast. But as it stands it is a great book to listen to and enjoy.

Wonderful

just as good as I remembered it, reminds me of a tail of old Japan, with a smattering if SF&F in it

Dive into Magic

Note: This is a review of book two. Please enjoy book one first.

Book one of this fantasy series is the story of Mara who, moments before she is to join irrevocably a religious order, is recalled to become the ruling Lady of a great House. Truly one of the best heroines with agency in a medieval-like fantasy world whose tale I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

Book one did not depend on magic or the acts of beings with magical powers to a great extent although it appeared at the end

I don't mind magic as a plot device. What I dislike is when a fantasy story suddenly resorts to magic, in a second or subsequent installment, to advance the saga. That is, when magic wasn't integral to the story from the beginning. (Mara remains a non magic user thank goodness.)

I remember having the same reaction to this second book in the series when I first read it many years ago. [This is a review of the audio version.] I also recall disliking the third book then so I don't plan to listen to it now.

One thing that Ms. Wurts has done well is end each book without a cliffhanger.

Book two, this one, the Servant of the Empire, is also a story of forbidden love. Lady and slave. Well worth your time if you like such things, which I do when well done as it is here.

Pinnacle of late 80’s high fantasy

The narration was tremendous, the writing compelling. The level of intrigue was great, fantastic touches of magic. Refreshing to have a great female lead as

Outstanding

The political intrigue, backstabbing …out playing each other With spies etc…
So young Mara in the first book gets to learn how to play the game! At times The game of the council in the Houses in the Empire are ruthless & backstabbing.

But in the second book she masters it with precise precision with a little help with the people around her especially a new character name Kevin a captive slave of Midkemia: Zun .
she finds her self as the most despised to her enemies more than ever.
Note the third and final installment is called “Mistress to the Empire”

I swear them a honorable 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There is a parallel chapter in Servant of the Empire that connects the “Magician:Master-to the story because they run parallel. A certain beloved character is there🤔.

Invest time Read the Riftwar Cycle for the 2 trilogies are great in my opinion or just treat the empire Trilogy as its own ..
