About this listen

“A contemporary novel of masterful horror replete with magic, fantasy, and more than a little stylish sensuality.” (The Washington Post)

Phil Hastings was a lucky man - he had money, a growing reputation as a screenwriter, a happy, loving family with three kids, and he'd just moved into the house of his dreams in rural of magic - and about to be altered irrevocably by a magic more real than any he dared imagine. For with the Magic came the Bad Thing, and the Faerie, and then the Fool...and the resurrection of a primordial war with a forgotten People - a war that not only the Hastings but the whole human race could lose.

“Absorbing, thought-provoking, and thoroughly magical. Feist's skillfully crafted prose illuminates many of the darker sides of fairy stories.... Try it as a bedtime story...but only on nights when you can take some time getting to sleep.” (The West Coast Review of Books)

This is by far one of my favorite stories that I can dive I to numerous times. Such a modern blend of fantasy and contemporary themes throughout. I own two signed copies of this novel. Wish he would have written more in the genre.

Modern Fantasy

I first read this book in 1990 and I’ve never forgotten it throughout the years from time to time I find myself thinking of it or thinking of a paragraph I got the term “widdershins” from the book and still use that term today.
Just an outstanding effort by Feist. I think it would make an outstanding motion picture!

Not sure where the venom and vitriol comes from in some of these reviews- it’s a fine read, an easier listen, and no doubt, someday, a very good movie. Lends itself to that medium anyway🤷🏻‍♂️

An enjoyable read

The narrator, while able to voice different characters and convey drama and horror, seems to have never heard a woman speak outside of an episode of 'The Golden Girls'. They all have parody-of-Lesley-Jordan somewhere in their sound. It's enough to be distracting. Faerie Tale is not aging that well in terms of this less-important aspect of the story but there is no need to make it worse.

Oh! Ewww. That's unfortunate.

There are some books that you will go back to over and over again. Often times you will lean more hints, more foreshadowing, more details, on the second, 3rd fourth, and so on read. Or in this case, listen. Raymond E Feist Is one of my favorite authors and this is a wonderful modern day fantasy novel with compelling characters, eerie fantasy figures, a solid plot, and excellent dialogue. The reading as well executed. Two big thumbs up!

I read this in paperback years ago and had was excited to hear it in audio. The story itself is wonderful. The imagination of the writer as he brings you on the nail-biting journey is as good as I remember. The reader was just okay. There wasn't a lot of excitement in his reading. It was more like he just wanted to get the job over and done with. Sort of a let down as far as an audio.

Great storyline. Okay reader

Very interesting story that kept me listening, even though it wasn't at all what I thought I was getting into. I really loved the voice actor, at times I forgot their wasn't a whole cast.

Not what I expected

As usual Mr Feist’s work is compelling and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Great book

I read this book when it first came out and really liked it, so I anticipated enjoying it again. instead, I could barely stand listening to it and only persevered through 4 chapters. The narration was adequate. Although the male narrator's female voices seem affected and give them an air of insincerity, this is sadly not uncommon and I can usually make allowances for it. in this case however it just added to my overall dissatisfaction with the tone of the book. Maybe it was an 80's-90's fantasy fiction trend, but the characters are too pat, too perfect, and their interactions and interior musings are predictable and what is meant to come across as wry often self-deprecating humor began to grate. The story itself is fine, maybe I have just read too many deeper, darker, better depictions of 'dark faerie' since college days.

I wanted to like it again
