Publisher's summary

AD 1272. Recovering from a great tragedy that had befallen his family, Scott de Wolfe, eldest son of William de Wolfe and Jordan Scott, has become a career knight with no feeling, no compassion. As a premier knight for Henry III, Scott has been tasked with the management of the massive fortress of Castle Canaan after the death of the castle's commander. Although it seems like a simple enough task, little does Scott know that the moment he enters this fortress is the moment his life will change... forever.

Lady Avrielle du Rennic is reeling over the death of her husband, and she blames de Wolfe for it. Fed by grief, she lashes out at the big knight who has come to take her husband's place and, eventually, take the fortress. Scott has no patience for the woman in mourning, but he stops short of punishing her because she is the mother to three small children.

When Scott happens to save one of her children from certain doom, a path of healing and understanding begin for them both. But when the king intervenes to take Avrielle and her children away, Scott must fight for what has become precious to him. He cannot stand to lose another family.

A deep and passionate love is born from the ashes of grief in this stunning medieval romance, part of the de Wolfe Pack series.

Wonderful!

Kathryn is simply brilliant! She can write tales like no other! She puts all the emotions into my head.
Sean is a great narrator. He can take me right along with the characters.

ShadowWolfe

I would not necessarily call this a romance. It has romantic elements, but it is more of a story of a grieving man and his journey to be whole and to find happiness again. I think that Kathryn Le Veque does an excellent job of writing about men who are strong but not afraid to show emotions. The most beautiful scenes in this book were not the love scenes between Scott and Avrielle, but rather the scenes between father, son, and friends. If you are a true romance junkie you maybe disappointed with this book, but I loved it. Was I disappointed? Yes, a little bit at first, but my disappointment was replaced by awe. This is superb storytelling. It lets you know that the author loves taking her readers on a journey.

Shadow Wofle, love and loss

Scott de Wolfe is the loving gregarious first born son by only fifteen minutes ahead of his twin brother Troy de Wolfe, they are sons of the powerful, legendary English border lord, Sir William de Wolfe. Troy and Scott’s life were changed forever when a tragic accident claimed the lives of their wives and children. They all were swept away in a drowning accident in which Scott lost his beloved his wife and two small children. Scott simply ran as far away from his family as possible, it was too painful to be to see their faces, knowing they all blamed him for the tragic accident. He’s become s stone cold warrior with a heart of ice and quick to take strike he’s become known as the Black Adder.
Scott de Wolfe took his army and became a career knight for the King. Scott’s friend Nathaniel de Rennic was killed during a battle when died from an arrow meant for Scott de Wolfe. Now doing the King’s bidding Scott has been tasked with the management of the massive fortress of Castle Canaan after the death of the castle's commander until the King decides the widow’s fate. Castle Canaan is a rich fortress and the King doesn’t want it to fall into enemy hands, it will instead become will become a political pawn.
Lady Avrielle du Rennic is reeling over the death of her husband and she blames de Wolfe for it. Lady Avrielle has a startling effect on Scott when he meets her. He starts to feel his old self trying to reemerge, especially when he sees her grieving with her children and helps to deliver of her children, the healer he used to be comes out to save the unborn child’s life. Scott’s tragic loss has been taboo amongst his friends and fellow knight, but we see a slow weakening in his defenses when he encounters Lady Avrielle and her children.
Scott starts to grieve for his young family as he and Avrielle learn together how to grieve for their lost loved ones. He’s found a kindred soul in Avrielle who understand what love and loss truly means. He slowly begins to embrace life again when we see him playing war with the toy soldiers and her four year old son Stephen, this brings back fond memories of him of playing with his young sons. This is a sweet and loving reawaking between to wounded and lost souls who so deserve to be happy. 5 STARS as for this amazing story of love and loss as we follow along on the journey where we see Scott and Avrielle falling in love is both precious and beautiful to behold as they find their HEA!!! This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

Love The Story, Not The Narrator

This is another great story. I wondered what would happen to Scott and it was exciting. I wish this book was narrated by Brad Wills, It would have been total enjoyment.

I wish there was more told about their marriage

There were a lot of touching scenes and I shed more than a few tears. I liked the way that the relationship developed between the Hero and Heroine; they had both lost their spouse. However, I was disappointed that there was not any story of their lives after their marriage.

For those who do not like all the sex in romances, this book will not offend you. Their is only one partial intimate encounter.

The narrator was much better than the last book, thank gosh.

Unfortunately, none of the books are as good as book 1;or even book 0. Book one was 30+ hours and felt like a true complete story. All the others have been less than 1/2 the length and, therefore, 1/2 a story. I will try one more book, in the series. If it isn't any better, I will likely stop listening to this series.

A great sequel

A lot of mourning and death, barely any sex or romantic fantasy; but still a great read!!

The summary does not describe the book at all. If I were to write a summary, it would be this:

Recently widowed, a mother of 2 small children, near the end of her 3rd pregnancy, stands up to the knight which not only has taken control of her castle but for whom her husband laid down his life.

A man who has lost his family and thus his way in life, some say even his very soul was discarded that mournful day. He suffered greatly for years until the day he met the two children and their heavily pregnant mother; all grieving their own loss.

Together they seek comfort in one another; both having lost someone dear to them, each having an understanding of one another's pain.

Soon the woman is forced to marry a man for political protection of the castle- under siege since the death of her husband. The knight must search for a way to save her from a husband who cares more for her holding than for her spirit. And also, keep from admitting he, himself, longs to make her his wife.

Will he be able to protect her from such a marriage? Will he be able to protect himself and his men from the wrath of her dead husband's soilders? Will he be able to open his heart to this woman and her children after he has lost so much?

Emotional

I enjoyed this story narrated by Sean Patrick Hopkins. Scott de Wolfe’s story of grief and newfound love is one of Kathryn Le Veque’s best.

Wolfe’s

I’m loving the Wolfe Series. I wish they were all on audible. I love the way I can easily go back & forth from reading to listening.
This book was hard to take. It was too deep into one’s grief. Toward the end it was lighter, so that’s what I liked the most.
All said, it was another good book in the Wolfe Family Saga!

Kathryn Le Veque has done it again

This book was as moving as all of Kathryn Le Veques books. I laughed and cried and was so involved I forgot that I can’t stay up all night listening to the book. I’m saddened that I notice that she has some new books out that aren’t on Audible and as I can’t see to read them I’m so depressed but I’m waiting for them to come out on Audible
