About this listen

Sabina Mancari never questioned her life as the daughter of Chicago's leading mob boss until bullets tear apart her world and the man she thought she loved turns out to be an undercover Prohibition agent. Ambushes, bribes, murder, prostitution—all her life, her father sheltered her from his crimes, but now she can no longer turn away from the truth. Maybe Lorenzo, the fiance who barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world. But can she truly turn her back on her family?

All his life, Lorenzo's family assumed he would become a priest, but he has different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. Despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn't so unlike his mafiosi father and brothers. Has he, in trying to protect Sabina, forced her into the arms of the Prohibition agent bent on tearing her family apart? How can they rebuild what has so long been neglected and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?

Shadowed Loyalty, set amid the glitz and scandal of the Roaring Twenties, examines what love really means and how we draw lines between family and our own convictions, especially when following one could mean losing the other.

Strong characters

Rosanna M White weaves terrific stories. What I enjoy most is that all of the characters in the stories are well developed and even the side characters have detailed back stories that work their way through the plot. She writes so well that I am instantly hooked. Transported to another time and place. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

So disappointing!

I’ve been on a Roseanna M. White bend recently and have listened to all of her books I could get my hands on. I wasn’t really looking forward to this one, it being a stand-alone novel, instead of a sequel, but decided to try it anyway. I couldn’t finish it. It’s so much darker and grimier than her other books that it just gave me a disgusting feeling. The narrator doesn’t help. She does a decent enough job with the male voices, but every female sounded either like a seductress or a whiny child. It drove me crazy! I feel like this book highlighted the sin and shame of the characters far more than it did the faith and spirituality. None of the characters knew how to be faithful to each other, whether in word or deed, resulting in one fidelity argument after another. I couldn’t like any of the characters from the beginning and the farther I got, the more unrest I felt. The author’s other books are world’s apart from this one and I hope this book doesn’t shadow first-time listeners opinions of her.

Disappointed

I couldn’t finish it. One reason for this was the atrocious narration. It was painful! Also, I could not find a single character to root for; I disliked them all.
