About this listen

Her gilded world holds a deeply hidden secret.

After years of tragedy, Gwen Kellerman now lives a quiet life as a botanist at an idyllic New York college. She largely ignores her status as heiress to the infamous Blackstone dynasty and hopes to keep her family's heartbreak and scandal behind her.

Patrick O'Neill survived a hardscrabble youth to become a lawyer for the downtrodden Irish immigrants in his community. He's proud of his work, even though he struggles to afford his ramshackle law office. All that changes when he accepts a case that is sure to emphasize the Blackstones' legacy of greed and corruption by resurrecting a 30-year-old mystery.

Little does Patrick suspect that the Blackstones will launch their most sympathetic family member to derail him. Gwen is tasked with getting Patrick to drop the case, but the old mystery takes a shocking twist neither of them saw coming. Now, as they navigate a burgeoning attraction and growing danger, Patrick and Gwen will be forced to decide if the risk to the life they've always held dear is worth the reward.

Highly recommend- storyline/ narration = perfect book

The movement of the characters through the book was interesting. It was thought provoking, easy to follow along. The narrator had a superb delivery of the story.

Excellent historical novel

This was not my first book by this author but I am just as impressed with her ability to immerse us into a world long past yet with remain true to human nature. The romance between Gwen & Patrick is heady but also mature, the wisdom of the second time around. Starting the 3rd book now.

Very interesting story

I enjoyed hearing this historical fiction story. Not predictable. Did not realize how much prejudice there was against the Irish at that time.

Never a dull moment!

I think this might be my new favorite Elizabeth Camden book! So Good! The story and characters are so engrossing and there is never a dull moment where the story lags. It made an afternoon of decluttering a closet actually enjoyable, and it was hard to pause the story when it was time to move on to other things. 5 stars for the story and narration.

enjoyed the story line. good writing. good attention to details of that era, lifestyle, and facts.
narrator did good job keeping characters straight, moving fwd well, but I personally didn't care for her inflections.

Annoying female protagonist

How Gwen was painted as sooooo gooooood and was always sooooooooo thoooughtful and caaaaaaring... yet I never felt anything for her... speaks volumes. She kept scolding the male protagonist for problems he barely had and grew annoying. Not to mention, everything about stock market values and percentages made me feel like I was taking accounting classes again. I liked the setting, and the audio book quality was great.

Author is getting in a rut

I have loved Elizabeth Camden books in the past, but the last three have seemed like the same story, just a different topic. It’s honestly getting hard to keep interested in the story because they are all so similar. I didn’t even finish the previous book she wrote because of that. This one is following the same line. And the narrator puts emphasis and inflection on the wrong places in a sentence or too often. The reading doesn’t flow. It sounds like a news report. I just can’t get into the narrator or the story.
