About this listen

Subtitled Richard Sharpe and the Invasion of France, June to November 1913, this story features a corrupt political enemy who is determined to disband the South Essex Regiment, and to destroy the life of Major Richard Sharpe.

Sharpe returns to England and discovers an illegal recruiting ring that sells soldiers like cattle to other divisions. The ringleaders know Sharpe is on their trail, and they try to kill him at every turn. But Sharpe is fighting for his command, and as he moves from the dark slums of London to the highest courts of political power, Sharpe will risk charges of treason and death for a final chance at revenge.

Terrific as always. Frederick Davidson is an acquired narration taste, but getting this far in the series, it's splendid

Audio version narrated by Frederick Davidson.

This is another side quest entry, but it's a fun one. The first half is almost like a mystery novel and the action in the second is classic Sharpe.

Fun side quest

Great fun, lots of adventure, some history. I liked all of Bernard Cornwell Sharpe's books so much that I was deeply depressed when I finished the last one available at audible.

Great change of pace in England, where it has its own share of bad men. Another great Bernard Cornwell story about the Peninsula War.

This story takes place between June and November 1913 (almost 200 years ago) in both Spain and London. The South Essex Regiment is not getting new men and Sharpe sets off to London to find out why. He finds corrupt politicians, an illegal recruiting ring that sell soldiers to other divisions and steals they wages and a shadow South Essex Regiment. Sharpe sets off to correct this wrong that provides the story with lots of suspense, intrigue and of course at the end of the book in Spain a famous Cornwell battle scene. Cornwell is in my opinion one of the best writers of historical fiction today. Frederick Davidson does a good job reading the book. I hope Audible keeps us stocked with lots of Cornwell books.

This is one of my favorite series' to read and listen too. This installment is one of my favorites of the series. While there isn't a lot of actual battle, Sharpe manages to have an exciting time anyway. There's intrigue, wit, excitement, and of course a lady. Everything you hope for in a Cornwell book. Plus, Frederick Davidson narrates each character masterfully.

One of my favorites in the Sharpe series.
