About this listen

In the early 1870's, the young state of Texas was struggling to survive. Its vast, undeveloped land of over 260 thousand square miles became a haven for the lawless. Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men. Shawgo - Texas Ranger.

Award-winning author Dusty Rhodes was born in Eastern Oklahoma - formerly the notorious Indian Territory. Dusty grew up on stories of the old west. After retirement, he began taking down those stories that had been gathering dust on the shelves of his mind and doing what he had dreamed of doing since childhood - writing historical westerns. His first book, Man Hunter, was named the best western e-book of 2002.

I bought this for my husband who loves westerns. I needed something to read and decided to read it too. I was pleasantly surprised. The story is interesting and has many twists and turns. I would recommend it for an enjoyable read that is easy to follow.

Good read!

Dusty Rhodes hits another one out of the park. Another great book by this author!

Very well written, as are all of Dusty's books.

This was excellent in developing both plot and characters. Gave a real incite into every day life in the 1800's. Great read.

Great Western

The narrator was not very good when he tried to give different voices and accents to the characters. At times it was very annoying to hear him try to give accents to military officers, etc.

Good book but the narrator was bad.

I really liked the book. I thought it had a good story line and good detail. You can't beat a good main character and a reader that sounds like you would like the person to be. This fits.

Nice Western

I read the book some time ago and find Rhodes a fun recreational read. Have Gene Engene read for me in the car during a commute is quite enjoyable.

This was not as enjoyable as "Manhunter" by the same author and narrator as "Shawgo". I gave it an overall 4 because I was still feeling warm and fuzzy over my listen of "Manhunter". The story was not as strong but the performance was excellent so I gave it a begrudging 4 overall. I plan to listen to more books by Dusty Rhodes, narrated by Gene Eugene, and hope I can find some which equal the pleasure I received listening to "Manhunter".

Love my Westerns

Adventure, romance, and wholesome listening. Narrator weaves a terrific tale, that makes it difficult to stop listening for sleep!

Great listen.

Gene Engene does a great job reading Dusty Rhodes books. He has a great voice for a western. The book has a good story line and lots of action to keep one interested, no sex, foul words or unnecessary violence. Shawgo as a Texas Ranger chases bad men and Indians as well as corrupt politicians. The valley he lives in sounds beautiful, wish I could pack up and move there and watch the horses, cattle and goats graze. Hope there are more books about Shawgo. Westerns make a nice change of pace stories.

Good western

Dusty Rhodes has a way of holding your attention to the end. He seems to know to what lengths he can go into his descriptions of things giving the reader a mental picture of the terrain, people, or situation without boring them.

Although fiction, Shawgo gives us an idea of the dangers of being a Texas Ranger and the wide scope of their duties...and why they were sorely needed to bring law and order into a lawless land.

Gene Engene was a good choice for narrator--he gave a great performance.

This book should not disappoint any fan of western genre.

Another Good One by Dusty Rhodes!
