About this listen

"What's a marriage license going to give us that we don’t already have?" "Proof," he said. "Of what?" "That we're a family."

Andi and David have settled happily into Andi's Northampton home, but David wants more. He wants them to get married. But their discussion is put on hold when Wylie, a fifteen-year-old girl, shows up in their backyard, bearing news that takes David’s mind off the future and sends it spiraling into the past. Reeling from David's news, Andi receives a startling announcement of her own, one that leads to a relationship with her estranged mother. As Andi and her mother get closer and Wylie weaves her way into their lives, Andi finds solace in an old comfort: her ex-fiancé. With the past threatening to eclipse their future, the timing for a wedding is all wrong. But if Andi knows anything about timing, it's that there's no time to waste.

Too Close To Home

The outline of this story was so eerily close to one part of my life that's it's taken me more than a couple of months to be able to write this review.
Suddenly finding out one day that you have a fifteen year old daughter is one of those surreal experiences that for months afterwards there is the sense that it isn't real. It was something that you thought about or wrote about, or was part of a dream. It can't be anything that actually happened; can it? The uncertainty in this narrative was certainly familiar to my daughter and I as was a certain amount of ambivalence and fear that both of us felt at various times. Discomfort became familiar not only to us for those around us; particularly for the daughter as she meets grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins for the first time.
Perhaps I'm far too close to the story to appreciate it but I found the book to be seriously lacking in depth and detail. There were far too many holes in the narrative and I found the conclusion less than satisfying. In short I chose this selection only because it was so close to my own experience and found out that it was all it was. This book didn't add a thing for me whether the fault was the author's or mine; I found it a mediocre story.

This narrator is terrible

Would you try another book from Elisa Lorello and/or Cynthia Barrett?

No

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She spoke in such a unnatural way that no one actually talks. She tried way too hard (and failed) to do different voices such as the teenager, the man, and the older woman. Just so bad. I can not believe this woman ever got hired.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Eh
