About this listen

How do you know if you've found the one? Can you really love the one you're with when you can't forget the one who got away?

Emily Giffin, author of the New York Times bestselling novels Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and Baby Proof, poses these questions—and many more—with her highly anticipated, thought-provoking new audio novel Love the One You're With.

Ellen and Andy's first year of marriage doesn't just seem perfect, it is perfect. There is no question how deep their devotion is, and how naturally they bring out the best in each other. But one fateful afternoon, Ellen runs into Leo for the first time in eight years. Leo, the one who brought out the worst in her. Leo, the one who left her heartbroken with no explanation. Leo, the one she could never quite forget. When his reappearance ignites long-dormant emotions, Ellen begins to question whether the life she's living is the one she's meant to live. At once heartbreaking and funny, Love the One You're With is a tale of lost loves and found fortunes—and will resonate with anyone who has ever wondered what if.

The story is a compelling one but as I neared the end of the book I found myself becoming annoyed with over-dramatic whiny tone that the main character seems to use for the entire story - although her tone was perfect for the character.

I have read and listened to this book numerous times, and it is like spending time with dear old friends. Emily Giffin’s characters are so well drawn. While the plot is always interesting, it seems to take a back seat to character development. This is probably my second favorite of her novels. The way she portrays the relationships of her characters draws you in and you find yourself relating to them. I highly recommend this book.

Emily Giffin is always a favorite!

I enjoyed this story and just like her other ones, I couldn’t stop listening. Loved it!

I just moved from Chicago to Atlanta so I could relate to this story a bit! Good chick lit book. Quick!

the last half of the book was a page turner. the first half was standard and too detailed.

Typical "one who got away" story.

Ok, it was a good read. Sometimes I felt me drifting away from the story but soon after it reeled me back in and in the end I did enjoy the story.

I just didn't LOVE it! I usually love Emily Giffin... the character development builds and all of the little side stories create a big, beautiful story. That still happens here, but I didn't find myself caring.
The story fills the time and is good if you are driving... but really, her newer works are better.

Not as enjoyable as other Emily Giffin's.

I was introduced to emily giffen through something borrowed, something blue. This book was not as good as the others, but it was worth listening to. The narrarator did a good job and i was not bored once. Worth buying.

If you could sum up Love the One You're With in three words, what would they be?

Just perfect timing!

What other book might you compare Love the One You're With to and why?

I believe I could compare it to E.G. Something Borrowed because it kind of has the same topic behind it: in relationships, timing is really important and could change the future.

What does Kathleen McInerney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think she captures the confusion and innocence of the main character. I believe the way she reads and her voice help the listener get into her feelings. I could almost imagine the whole body language just from the way she reads something the character is saying.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I almost did, actually. I guess it had to do with the fact I could empathize so well with the main character and what she was going through!

Any additional comments?

Highly recommend to those who are superficially confused about marriage and want to listen a different experience.

Perfect timing!
