About this listen
SHELBY'S VACATION by Nancy Beverly
Fantasy. Sex. Despair. (Hey, what are vacations for?)
Escape into a World of Fantasy, Passion, and Renewal...
Shelby craves a break from her L.A. life—and her heartbreak. Escaping the sting of unrequited love, she embarks on a solo vacation, hoping to find solace in the serenity of a rustic mountain resort. What she doesn’t expect is Carol, the enigmatic resort manager who carries her own emotional baggage, holding her back from finding true connection.
What begins as a fleeting vacation fling transforms into a profound journey of healing and self-discovery. Together, Shelby and Carol must confront the ghosts of their pasts to make room for love, trust, and the promise of a brighter future.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of California’s high country, Shelby’s Vacation is an evocative, romantic tale that explores the courage it takes to open one’s heart—and the magic that can happen when we do.
Elizabeth Sims, author of the award-winning Lillian Byrd Crime Series, raves: "What at first seems like an ordinary search for affection turns into something much deeper... Steeped in the natural beauty of the California high country, this is an uplifting and romantic novel about the power of love to heal hearts and minds."
Take the first step toward an unforgettable journey. Download Shelby’s Vacation on Audible today!

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Story
When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He'd ride up on his white steed and break the curse I've been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time, how the fairytale twisted into something far more crooked—and darker—than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

It all started when I was six years old. I was homeless. They were held prisoner. I saved them. Even though it put me in the system. They believed we built an unbreakable bond forged by trauma. These beautiful, damaged boys saw me differently than the rest of the world. As much as I wished I could feel the same. I couldn't. These boys—men—had too much anger. Too much hate.

A Fun Listen
Shelby’s Vacation was a fun listen. Hikers will especially enjoy hearing descriptions of the setting in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Everyone will relate to Shelby’s internal dialogue as she encounters various situations involving “fantasy, sex, and despair” during her vacation. Queer women will enjoy the love interests and the characters. There was humor in the story and I often found myself laughing out loud and nodding because I could relate. We’ve all been there in one way or another! This is the kind of book I like to read or listen to before lights out when I’m out camping or backpacking and am cozy in my sleeping bag. Also recommended for road trips on your future vacations (which will hopefully be free of despair)!
