About this listen

The shape of ancient evil

A series of grisly murders rocks London. At each location, only a jumble of bones remains of the deceased, along with a bizarre sphere covered in strange symbols. The son of the latest victim seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and his former partner, Dr. John Watson.

They discover the common thread tying together the murders. Bizarre geometries, based on ancient schematics, enable otherworldly creatures to enter our dimension, seeking to wreak havoc and destruction.

The persons responsible are gaining so much power that even Holmes’ greatest enemy fears them - to the point that he seeks an unholy alliance.

A very entertaining combination of two classic genres. I look forward to the next book.

Lots of fun

Gresh's writing style reads just like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

However, this book is a little scattered. Well, it had some elements that I found very engaging, it was hard to follow and much to be desired in the plot line.

I might well pick up the next book, but I haven’t decided yet.

He has Conan Doyle’s voice, but the story could use some help

Exquisite writing, plot, hooks, and characters. I will be buying the next two books, as well.

Excellent Blending of Genre

Good performance but story is lacking. Pace is off. Slow at times but then so quick that I had to RE listen chapter’s at other times. Story would have benefited from a good editor.

Great performance, pace weird

Definitely enjoyed the mix between two timeless classics. Sherlock & Cthulhu is done very well here.

Fun story

The writing was done in a neat perspective, if the audience is familiar with the Lovecraft Mythos, it is fun to watch the world’s greatest detective struggle comprehending forces he does not understand, but the reader sort if does.

I gave to also give props to the author - to get her research on both properties so well. Holmes felt like Holmes. And the Dagonian lines were spot on…I think I even heard the narrator say “Toa-Toa” at one point in the runes readings. Hey, its a fun story. Can’t wait to dive into Book 2.

Neat to see Holmes & Watson facing a familiar evil

I thought the author did a really good job of capturing Sherlock Holmes and Watson. I’m a big Lovecraft fan, and that goes beyond pop media shows, movies and games that dabble in Lovecraftian lore. That being said, I think the author did a great job of capturing Lovecraftian lore and how it’s subtle and overlooked like a mystery we’ll never fully comprehend.

There wasn’t as much gore as all the reviews made it seem like, but there were some descriptive gory parts.

All in all, I feel like Sherlock had a tough time with this case and we barely scratched the surface, which is why I imagine there are two more books in the series. I’m excited to start the next one.

The world is saved… for now…

As a fan of both Sherlock & Cthulhu I always look forward to the meeting of the two.
And this is the start of yet another series of the pairing of the two.
I think its fantastic.
Well read well written.
thank you both.

Most Excellent!

I would say this probably is not for younger readers. The Cthulhu casebooks by James Lovegrove are probably better suited to a younger audience. This story kind of rambles back-and-forth and is peppered with extremely graphic and violent imagery that seems placed just for its own sake.

More graphic and violent than either Lovecraft or Sherlock Holmes.
