Publisher's summary

This is Django Wexler's third book in the cinematic fantasy Wells of Sorcery Trilogy featuring a fierce young woman skilled in the art of combat magic on an epic mission to steal a ghost ship.

Isoka has done the impossible - she's captured the ghost ship Soliton.

With her crew of mage-bloods, including the love of her life, Princess Meroe, Isoka returns to the empire that sent her on her deadly mission. She's ready to hand over the ghost ship as ransom for her sister Tori's life but arrives to find her home city under siege - and Tori at the helm of a rebellion.

Neither Isoka's mastery of combat magic nor Tori's proficiency with mind control could have prepared them for the feelings their reunion surfaces. But they're soon drawn back into the rebels fight to free the city that almost killed them.

needs work

great books in many areas and smart concepts. yet there were a number of holes and rushed plot advancement moments that severely hurt what could have been phenomenal

Not plausible but still rewarding - good series!

The young protagonists, especially Tori, have an unrealistically large impact on their world(s), as other reviewers have mentioned. Hard to envision adults so Respectful of very young teenagers. But an enjoyable tension-filled story line that kept me going for all three books,

Much of the tension for the characters is internal, and that’s probably why I enjoyed it so much. Their internal self-critical voices were very realistic. And I really loved the growth in the relationship between two teen girls. They were thoughtful, loving, and great role models for anyone seeking healthy relationship dynamics. Plus I really appreciated Jack and her quirky relationship with the world.

In summary - great characters, ok stories, and a good listen (though I did slow down the speed 1 notch).

Not as great as the other books

I enjoyed the other books. This book lost my interest. I found myself losing track of where I was in the book and didn't care.

Wrapped in a bow

I feel like a lot of stones were untouched and a lot of side streets were missed in this book. It being the last in the series, I was pleased with the outcome, but there were so many missed opportunities to explore this universe more thoroughly. I want to know more about our main characters and would love to join any one of them on a new adventure. Perhaps “Valiant Jack” could tell us her origin story??? I’d listen as long as she wears her cape!!

Monster, monster, monster, rot, rot, rot!

Minor annoyances give way to a majorly satisfying conclusion to this trilogy.

I acclimated to Ms. Wu’s nasal narration for Tori’s half of the story and better suspended belief that 14 year old Tori could be a contender. And, although certain overly repeated phrases still caused me to twitch, the merging of Tori and Isoka’s storyline into one brought together all of the best characters, plots, and well-magic fight-scene combinations.

Finally, we have baddies with names and personalities to confront our A-Squad of engaging heroes. Manipulative Naga and menacing Kahtee are formidable foes. Isoka, Tori, Meroe, Zerun and my personal favorite Crazy, Dashing, Not Particularly Humble Jack are the best fight-team ever! Loose plots come together brilliantly in an action and magic packed, final battle.

True, this ended up being more YA than grim-dark. In this final book the bad guys are always bad, there are no heart breaking betrayals, and none of the A-Squad are ever truly in peril. But, this world, its well-magic, and all of the kick@ss ladies serve up a unique fantasy epic.
