About this listen

The sisters of the Order of Saint Rita captain their living ship into the reaches of space in Lina Rather's debut novella, Sisters of the Vast Black.

Years ago, Old Earth sent forth sisters and brothers into the vast dark of the prodigal colonies armed only with crucifixes and iron faith. Now, the sisters of the Order of Saint Rita are on an interstellar mission of mercy aboard Our Lady of Impossible Constellations, a living, breathing ship which seems determined to develop a will of its own.

When the order receives a distress call from a newly-formed colony, the sisters discover that the bodies and souls in their care - and that of the galactic diaspora - are in danger. And not from void beyond, but from the nascent Central Governance and the Church itself.

Didn't realize that I picked up such a short listen, but it was recommended to me.

I enjoyed the story, though it had me thinking of Fr Paul Duré from Hyperion, Fr Emilio Sandoz from The Sparrow, and Moya from Farscape. All interesting memories but distracting from this story, which basically just introduces the characters, does some world building, then proceeds to a brief action sequence. Then it is done.

If I didn't have an abundance of credits (they have been piling up now that I don't commute to work), I probably would be unhappy that I used a credit on this. Not because it is bad, but just because there is so little story.

short but sweet

Good world building and I’m interested in the characters. I like the story and it was performed well. I will be listening to the next one.

Surprised I liked this so much

Appealing fresh plot, well crafted to include enough world building history and character development backstory to make the people real and the present feel urgent, consequential.

A said issuing bite of something unique

Highly recommended! A pleasant surprise. Ladies this one is out of this world! Short and sweet

Unique, imaginative, heartwarming

Absolutely adored this one. For fans of Becky Chambers, Ann Leckie, and good space stories.

Living ships! Space nuns! Secrets!

I’m not especially religious so I was a little apprehensive at first. I felt like the author made religion relatable without feeling overly preach-y and even went into some of the darker aspects of organized religion.

The end of this book was so interesting. It really fleshed out beautifully. I had to immediately listen to the sequel. (Which I also enjoyed).

I’m somewhat new to stories set in space, but very much enjoyed these 2 books.

The end

I did not enjoy this book. Though the setting is interesting, much of the book is an info dump about the world and the character’s backstories, and the narration is robotic.

Dull story, robotic narration
