Review

Pretty decent collection.
The Bandit's Run- Pretty decent. Could be turned into a show or could've been an episode on Supernatural
Bird's Eye- It was ok. Like zombies with powers.
Candybar Killer- I feel like it should've been longer
The Selected- I wanted more out of this too. It was good.
Companion- Decent
Oneiric- This was pretty good
Letters to Santa- This was pretty good as well
Thalassophobia- It was ok. I'm not a big "Oh my gosh! A slightly bigger creature than normal that also seems to be angry" fan.
A Walk on the Beach- Decent.

Overall, I feel like the author does a good job of introducing monsters, but the mystery of where they come from, adds a tinge of mystery to it. They're just there and it's gonna wreck havoc.

Fantastic collection!

I just listened to Sleeping in the Fire by John Durgin, and it was such a fantastic short story collection!

I enjoyed all of the stories, but I definitely had a few favorites.

The Candy Bar Killer felt like an 80s Halloween movie in the best way. The unexpected ending made this one my top pick initially, but then I decided I couldn’t pick just one.

Oneiric is a little bit horror, a little bit sci-fi, a little bit futuristic, and a whole lot creepy. I absolutely love the premise of this one.

Letters to Santa takes us back to our childhood. Think back to the days when you believed that writing a letter to Santa could bring you everything you ever wanted. Now think about what you would ask for, but be careful!

I listened to the audiobook of this one, and the narrator Aaron Camacho does a fantastic job. He voices all the characters uniquely, but he still manages to sound natural and authentic. His voice switches effortlessly between characters, and the emotion is captured perfectly.

Give it a listen and see for yourself!

A Little Bit For Everyone!

Do you believe in Christmas miracles??
Would you snorkel in Jamaica?
Cults interest you??
Maybe you love a little creature feature while reading horror!

John Durgin provides such a nice variety of horror stories in this collection! They were fun. I was left imagining myself in many situations that I hope never happen!

An amazing and spooky collection of short stories.

Sleeping in the Fire, by John Durgin. My first book by John Durgin was The Cursed Among Us which I absolutely loved. So when I was given the chance to read and review this collection of short stories I was excited!

I have rated each short story below and not a single one was below a 4, which for me is excellent. The stories had a wide range from vacations gone wrong and Halloween legends to Christmas "miracles" and creature features. He did an amazing job making characters you actually care about in a short period of time. I was definitely invested in these character's stories.

Standouts for me were Letters to Santa, Bird's Eye, and The Candy Bar Killer. I enjoyed all of these stories, which is rare in my experience with these collections. I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator, Aaron Camacho, did an excellent job bringing the characters to life.

I would highly recommend this book with an overall rating of 4.5 stars!

The Bandit's Son 4.00
Bird's Eye 5
The Candy Bar Killer 5
The Selected 4.75
Companion 4.00
Oneiric 4.25
Letters to Santa 5
Thalassophobia 4.0
A Walk on the Beach 4.5

Great book of short horror

As a fan of John Durgins' Inside the Devils Nest, I couldn't wait to listen to this book. There's a variety of horror and some of the stories may you question...what would I do in that situation. Anyone who has read Inside the Devils Nest should absolutely check this book out!!

Very good collection of short stories

There was a couple I had already read, but all and all those included, I liked all the stories. Of course some are better than others, but none were bad. If you’re looking for a anathology you won’t be disappointed. If you have read any of his other stories and liked them you should love these. Worth the credit definitely.

Do you still believe in Santa?

This was a great collection of short horror stories by an author that is quickly becoming one of my favorites! There is something for everyone here. A killer shark, terror at a carnival, a new companion that isn't so cute and cuddly, a creepy cult and adventure in the Wild West are just a few of things that await the reader.

There is plenty of emotion in these stories as characters deal with young love, loss, abuse and terror. And, if you don't still believe in Santa, one of these tales might just change your mind!

The narrator did a great job and added to my enjoyment of the book. If you enjoy horror stories, you can't go wrong with this collection!

Tales sure to terrify!

A great collection! I’m never let down by Durgin’s work. Whether it’s the fleshed-out characters, the crafty kills, or the skillful use of gore, his stories are always gruesomely entertaining. My favorite story just might be Bird’s Eye. Who doesn’t love a good chaos and carnage at a carnival story?

The narrator did a terrific job with this audiobook! A narrator can make or break an audiobook, but Camacho was just awesome!
