Publisher's summary
Insightful essays, poignant life advice, and pithy pearls of wisdom from one of comedy’s brightest rising stars
Comedian, writer, actress, and social media star Amanda Seales is a force of nature who has fearlessly and passionately charted her own course through life and career. Now, in her one-of-a-kind voice that blends academic intellectualism, Black American colloquialisms, and pop culture fanaticism, she’s bringing her life’s lessons and laughs in this audiobook. This volume of essays and axioms provides Seales’s trademark “self-help from the hip” style of commentary, fueled by ideology formed from her own victories, struggles, research, mistakes, risks, and pay-offs. Unapologetic, fiercely funny, and searingly honest, Small Doses engages, empowers, and enlightens listeners on how to find their truths while still finding the funny!

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Sesali Bowen learned early on how to hustle, stay on her toes, and champion other Black women and femmes as she navigated Blackness, queerness, fatness, friendship, poverty, sex work, and self-love. Her love of trap music led her to the top of hip-hop journalism. But despite all the beauty, complexity, and general badassery she saw, Bowen found none of that nuance represented in mainstream feminism. Thus, she coined Trap Feminism, a contemporary framework that interrogates where feminism meets today's hip-hop.

Smart and irreverent, Dr. V fuses the brains and insight of a nerdy PhD with the heart of a doting Italian mother and the artful profanity of a Philly trucker. Dr. V’s signature combination of humor, hard science, and heart make Bad Advice an iconoclastic course correction like no other. Bad Advice is a fiercely sharp wake-up call that tackles some of self-help’s most damaging truisms.

Everyone can manifest. We're all doing it - every second of every day - without even realising it. For years, journalist and podcaster Jordanna Levin thought that she was psychic. She would worry about things and they would come true. But she wouldn't just worry, she would feel them, take subconscious action towards them and believe with every cell of her being that they would happen - and most of the time, they did. Until one day she changed the game. If she could manifest mishaps and disasters, why not the things she actually wanted?

Superheroes don't start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents' murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham. What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves.

In this extraordinary book, Sarah Polley explores what it is to live in one’s body, in a constant state of becoming, learning, and changing. Each of these six essays captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person she is now but was not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

As the Gestapo's most wanted person, and one of the most highly decorated servicewomen of the war, it's a story worth telling. After living and working in Paris in the 1930's, Nancy married a wealthy Frenchman and settled in Marseilles. Her idyllic new life was ended by World War II and the invasion of France. Her life shattered, Nancy joined the French Resistance and, later, began work with an escape-route network for Allied soldiers.

Honest, Insightful, and Funny
This is by far one of my most favorite books to read and to hear read to me by Amanda Seales herself. I enjoy her podcast Small Doses and this is like the extended and in more detail version of her podcast [cute little side effects and all <3]
This book is aimed specifically at women, black women in particular, but I HIGHLY recommend this book to guys as well, straight men in particular, because it really provides some great useful do's and don'ts and other key gems that could help them in their pursuit of love.
As a quirky gay black male creative myself, I relate a lot to the gems that Amanda drops all throughout this book. I had so many ah-ha moments and in many cases it was like hearing someone read my own diary to me which is SO NICE to hear someone speak my truth to me and call me in on things that I do and can do better about.
Overall, this book is a MUST READ!! I could really go on and on about this book which is why I bought my best friend a hard copy so we could discuss it together. lol

If you like the podcast you will love this book
My issue with Seales's podcast is that the episodes aren't long enough. This book expands on a lot of what she talks about in her dope podcast. I also found the chapter about being a multi-hyphenate to be especially relatable and give my personal existence some grounding. Due to this grounding, I've ventured into taking my projects more seriously so that I can start to live a life that I enjoy.

I never write reviews!
I never write reviews! This book was absolutely AMAZING! Referred by a friend and glad I listened. Didn’t know much about Amanda Seales prior to reading the book. But I will for sure listen to anything this woman writes, narrates or stars in. Loved it! She’s educated, confident, entertaining and funny as hell!
