Publisher's summary

With over a dozen mending bones and other injuries wreaking havoc on his body, along with a shredded spirit twisting his sanity, former sheriff David Wolf is in no shape for any sort of action. But when FBI surveillance units move into the valley and surround his house, it seems he's about to have no choice.

Wolf quickly learns, however, things are not what they seem, and a trap has been set with him as the prey. If he wants to live long enough to bring justice for the only woman he's ever loved and to see his son grow into a man, broken body or not, he must move, and move fast.

Picking up where Cold Lake left off, this exciting sixth installment of the David Wolf mystery thriller series has Special Agent Kristen Luke of the FBI risking career and limb to help Wolf in a quest for the truth - a quest that will send them on an action packed adventure across the mountains of Colorado and back to Rocky Points for a deadly showdown that will reveal the answer to the one question Wolf desperately must know.

Worth listening to

Basically a continuation of the previous title in his series. I wish the author had just combined the two books into one. I enjoy this David Wolf series, but didn’t find anything in this one that made it outstanding. Sometimes it seemed like the characters were just going from crisis to crisis, just to fill in the book.

Love this series

Every single book is so good. The characters, the story line, the action, all of it. Next on our list is David Wolf, Book 7.

One of the violent of this series so far. And, it had one firearm mistake, the first in this series. But, we will see how the next one goes.

This series just keeps getting better!

Smoked Out is book #6 in the David Wolf series. Basically it is part two of the previous book, Cold Lake. I would strongly suggest reading/listening to these books in order. Especially books 5 & 6.
In this book David Wolf the protagonist is getting over injuries sustained in the previous book and trying to find out who killed his ex wife. Two biggest injuries are a broken femur and a head injury affecting his inner ear ( equilibrium and balance). So, he's in quite a bit on pain. Meanwhile he's being set up for multiple murders and his son isn't speaking to him because he blames him for his mother's death. Wolf can't do this one alone but gets lots of help from friends and colleagues.
Fast paced with plenty of action. The characters are fleshed out and believable with no superhuman abilities.
Sean Patrick Hopkins is perfect for these books. He does an excellent job narrating.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and the entire series.

Flows from Book 5

If you didn't read/listen to book 5, do that first or you will be lost. And while I did not enjoy book 5 you really do need it to understand and enjoy book 6. Book 6 Smoked Out is more like the earlier 4 books with many key characters playing key roles in moving the story forward and yet also getting glimpse into who they are and what is important to them. Also in Book 6 Wolf's actions and behaviors are more constant with books 1-4 than with book 5 where he behaved out of character (getting drunk and into a fight). Although the character development is minimal in this book relying on the reader to have picked up information from book 5 and earlier. Book 6 brings closure to many issues left open in Book 5 and opens a new chapter/book opportunity for book 7. If you liked the earlier Wolf stories and/or listened to book 5 you owe it to your self to finish the story line from book 5 with book 6. I am already looking forward to the release of Book 7.

Barely okay book..

What a disappointment this book was. Between his passing out from pain over and over again, his ears ringing all the time, his sudden dizziness that dropped him to his knees at the most in-opportune times and his vomiting again and again I didn’t like this book at all. At 65% I was tempted to just stop reading. In the first 5 books David Wolf was a hero at every turn but in this book he was just nothing. The author should have made more time pass and let Wolf heal a lot more and this would have been better. The author ruined Wolf in this book. IMO. Worse book out of the 6 I’ve read.

This was about a drug cartel and the main bad guy killing people all over the place, even the head of the cartel himself, and Wolf was being accused of murder and was on the run.

I liked every player in the book except David Wolf. I have no idea how this got so many 4 and 5 star reviews with such a useless “hero.” It got 3 stars from me because I liked everyone else and the storyline.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 1 time.

As to the narration: Sean Patrick Hopkins is a good narrator but he still needs help with this female voices.
