About this listen

It is with great pleasure that we are able to retell the stories, first published as Forty Delicious Years, of 40 varied travelers who have Murni and Murni's Warung in common. We initially compiled these recollections in 2014 on the 40th anniversary of Murni's opening of Murni's Warung in Ubud, Bali, the first international-style restaurant in Ubud.

We have renamed this volume So Many Delicious Years, and Murni has added a number of recipes. We are pleased to mention that Forty Delicious Years won the prestigious Gourmand Award in 2019.

A truly captivating audiobook—an ideal introduction to Bali as I prepare for a six-week journey across the island. So moved was I by the abundant praise for Murni that I canceled a prior reservation to secure a week’s stay at Murni’s Ubud House. The book unfolds as a series of vivid recollections, shared by an array of distinguished contributors, whose credentials often rival the length and depth of their stories.

Through their voices, I glimpsed Bali before the advent of electricity and refrigeration, discovered the quiet strength and renown of Murni herself, and absorbed insights into the island’s rich cultural traditions. If there is one shortcoming, it is the absence of a PDF companion to the audiobook for the recipes described—though even without it, I can almost taste the smoked duck and carrot cake that await me.

I loved the book! Murni is an extraordinary person and richly deserves the plaudits she receives from the various contributors to this volume/audiobook. Yes, the food at The Warung in Ubud is consistently delightful -- great flavors, great care in the preparation and a terrific setting in which to enjoy one's meal. But, more than that, Murni treats every guest she meets with a genuine welcome and takes a great interest in what might bring them to Ubud, indisputably the "cultural center" of Bali. The variety of contributors to the book attest to Murni's wonderful qualities and why the Warung merits their praise.

Delicious cooking and an equally delicious book!
