About this listen

Build healthy soil and grow better plants

Robert Pavlis, a gardener for over four decades, debunks common soil myths, explores the rhizosphere, and provides a personalized soil fertility improvement program in this three-part popular science guidebook.

Healthy soil means thriving plants. Yet untangling the soil food web and optimizing your soil health is beyond most gardeners, many of whom lack an in-depth knowledge of the soil ecosystem.

Soil Science for Gardeners is an accessible, science-based guide to understanding soil fertility and, in particular, the rhizosphere - the thin layer of liquid and soil surrounding plant roots, so vital to plant health.

Coverage includes:

  • Soil biology and chemistry and how plants and soil interact
  • Common soil health problems, including analyzing soil's fertility and plant nutrients
  • The creation of a personalized plan for improving your soil fertility, including setting priorities and goals in a cost-effective, realistic time frame.
  • Creating the optimal conditions for nature to do the heavy lifting of building soil fertility

Written for the home gardener, market gardener, and micro-farmer, Soil Science for Gardeners is packed with information to help you grow thriving plants.

is that related in some way to fung-gai? that was only the most pronounced of some of the very bizarre pronunciation otherwise, a very useful and handy book.

Poorly sourced personal opinion

The blatant disregard for current research in areas of soil health and nutrient uptake made me question everything in this book. I will not be wasting my time with the authors other misguided attempts at pushing the fact free thinking of the bro-scientist.

Snob

This book is filled with contradictions, things he states no proof you can go to any University and lookup proof! May have been sponsored by the commercial fertilizer industry. It does have some good information but that same information is available with greater detail for free A&L Great lakes labs Agronomy Handbook! written as they know and you should accept but only towards the end of the book does he state actual research. This isn't someone I would garden with!!!!

More harm than good.

Before explaining why, I’m going to highly recommend “More food from soil science” by Victor Tiedjens, which is also available on Audible. It has been my go to soil Bible for over 30 years. Should you decide to purchase a hardcopy, I can promise you it’s worth the high cost.

This book however, is not worth spending the money on even to listen to. It is full of contradictions, faulty information, and just completely lacking in any field observations or detailed data regarding quantities of nutrients in relation to other nutrients. It would be generally confusing and useless to a novice gardener, and generally frustrating to a veteran gardener. Try something else.
