About this listen

A contemporary novel with a strong suspense element from Oscar-nominated actress Meg Tilly set on a peaceful island village in the Pacific Northwest.

Dumped on the eve of her wedding and looking for a quiet place to lick her emotional wounds, Maggie Harris joins her sister on Solace Island, where she hopes to recover from the stunning betrayal. At first, Maggie resists Eve's impassioned argument about relocating permanently so the sisters can open their own local bakery. What she definitely doesn't need on her road to recovery are Eve's efforts to fix her up with their mysterious and alluring neighbor, Luke Benson - even if he is incredibly handsome and desirable.

Just as Maggie starts to get comfortable in her new surroundings, a car tries to run her down in the middle of the street. If it weren't for Luke's extremely quick reflexes, Maggie could have been killed, leading her to wonder just who exactly Luke Benson really is....

Luke thought he'd left the violence of the high-risk security world behind. But he can't stand by while Maggie's life is threatened. Luke will do anything to keep her safe - even moving Maggie and her sister into his house with its state-of-the-art security features. But with the secrets between them and an unknown threat stalking her heels, Luke will have to think fast to prove to Maggie she can trust him with her life - and with her heart.

Good read, but the second book is better

I liked the story, although in several places it seemed to drag a bit. I liked the second book better.

Loved this book

I thought it was very entertaining. I listened to it while I was spraying weeds. Made the time go by.

Hallmark movie meets gritty suspense

This was fun. There were twists & turns I didn't see ( and some that I did). The characters had enough depth that I'm hoping to hear more about them in future books. Sweet, sexy, sublime.

This is not the story that I was expecting

I almost never write reviews, but I felt so cheated I had to write one here. This book was presented as a mystery; and what it turned out to be was what was explained to me by a friend as a "romantic novel". Well, I guess the real meaning of romantic novel these days is "Romantic Porn".
I'm no prude, but I am not a fan of romance novels, even ones that are not so graphic. It's just not what I signed up for.
There was a bit of a mystery, but that was such a small part of the book that it wasn't worth the time it took to listen to it.
I used to like Meg Tilly as an actress, but feel she has really sunk to the level of writing for the cheap sell. No thank you.
I will be returning this one immediately.

Steamy

Good story once you get to it. I almost did not complete it, as the main characters could only seem to focus, in lude detail, on how aroused they were by each other.
I confess that I do not find entertainment in living vicariously through someone else's sex life. Maybe books should have ratings like movies, so readers will have a general idea what to expect in the content.

Ugh

This book was a bummer. I don't like writing negative reviews, but don't waste a credit on this one. The female lead was somehow very unlikeable and silly. The plot was twisted, and the ending came at you out of nowhere without adequate build-up. The performance was meh. But the narrators didn't have a lot to work with. Not worth the credit. Had trouble finishing it.

Wish I didn’t have swearing

I love the concept of this book and I love Meg Tilly but it’s a shame that some of the verbiage had to be used. We would like to be able to listen to this book on speaker but can’t around children.
Very disappointed

Stick to acting Meg

I purchased this on a whim as I'm a fan of romance with some action and thrills to it, and after seeing the reviews I figured, why not. well, I'll tell you why not.

The characters were mostly annoying and I found myself hoping the bad guys would kill the lead female character and just get it over with. Shes (spoiler alert) strong and brave enough to fake being unconscious and cut herself free from the ropes at the end, but goes all weak at the prospect that her ex special forces lover could have been killed when he was doing his former security job. Please. And the ex special forces guy, former head of his own security company, not only (spolier) let's her set up this for this saturday market deal after two attempts on her life and finding her ex dead, but fails to keep an eye on her. If anyone thinks that's realistic, you're nuts. Those are just two of the multitude of stupid things that made no sense to me regarding how the characters acted.. But whatever, let's move on to the crux of the matter folks. This is a romance book, and while I'm all for love at first sight or instant attraction, the whole "oh she needs a friend, I should be a better man" bs was just that. This isn't a battle of wills or some such nonsense to be pure and true. Both the main characters spent more time thinking about having sex then undid at 15. Get on with it already and make it worth the time. Also the scenes in question should make you a little hot, not make you wanna cringe. The sex scenes were sophomoric and pedestrian, trying to create drama and angst where there didnt need to be any. This will they, wont they crap was a waste. When they finally get to their first sexual encounter it felt like a couple of shy virgins fumbling in the dark. She's all, omg a cock, and he's all, I cant hold on at the barest touch. She can say the only man she ever slept with is the ex fine, but jesus, it's not like she never kissed a guy before or had any kind of intimacy. And the big bad former special forces guy talking about how he might blow in his shorts like some adolescent boy was ridiculous. Also, Meg if you're reading this, if you use the terms, cock, balls, dick, etc. in the text and then constantly have the main character refer to it as his netherregions, you seem to be missing the point. Use euphemisms or dont, you cant do both and ve convincing about the tone of your work. Which leads to the final problem, major spoiler here too, and that's the whole plot. The big, omg twist with the killer being in love with her ex and then killing him when she doesn't get her way. What a waste, M Night Shyamalan you are not, and that crap doesn't work for him either.

Overall the book was a waste with a whole bunch of filler and very little substance. You've got an ex special ops guy and a big rural environment and you didnt put them on the run where he actually gets to use his skills? Shit, if it wasn't for the boy, major random and unneeded addition, he wouldn't have even found her. It bounces perspective every couple pages which is not only annoying, but not done well. Read some Nora Roberts if you wanna see how it works well. I cant believe there are three books and this series. Meg, please stop or at the very least put some depth into the characters.
