About this listen

When disaster strikes, a family must fight to reunite.

The biggest solar storm in recorded history will hit Earth, and the resulting EMP pulse will fry electricity grids and disable fragile electronics. Transmission wires will melt, transformers will explode, modern vehicles and aircraft will cease to work. In less than a minute, the world will be taken back two centuries.

Lauren Nolan is in New York on a business trip when the blackout hits and the transportation system grinds to a halt. Trapped in the panic that envelops the metropolis, she has find a way to get back to her two children, 500 miles away in North Carolina. Unable to get word to them, and with society collapsing around her, she faces a long and harrowing journey on foot. Her husband is serving overseas, and it looks like she might never see him again.

Sergeant Rick Nolan is in Syria on a covert-ops mission against ISIS. When the solar storm wipes out his communications and his air cover, he and his small team find themselves on the same level as the enemy that surrounds them. Caught in a desperate fight for survival and forced to run, one thought is uppermost in their mind: How are they going to get home?

Very good book

Very good story and characters. It was slow through parts at the beginning and too fast at the ending. Overall one of the best Post EMP books.

Great teotwawki book!

I really enjoyed this book! I have listened to dozens of apocalyptic books. This is definitely one of my favorites. Too many have tales of families with everything they need to survive, prepped porn, no suffering and everything going right. This is not that book. They suffer, things go wrong, and some survive. If you’re offended by foul language, then I would pick a different genre. People aren’t going to use nice words when they are killing or being killed. I hope more people listen to this book, because I know they will enjoy it!

Rush to cram every thing intro one book

good start on this triple storyline ---but had to rush to fit all three line into a neat all threads tucked in ending where dad adn mom are home and kids are happy and the bad guy is eliminated.....

To those who have and have not.

The story rotates through several sub-plots of survivors dealing with the apocalypse in different ways. In this tale we study the Nolan family as they deal with the worst solar storm in history. Rick the father and soldier in Syria struggling to make his way home, Lauren the wife of Rick stranded in New York at a seminar and left at home to provide for the children, 12 yr. old Josh the young boy who sees much too much and is growing up much too fast, 7 yr. old Lizzy Josh’s sister, and grandma who is taking care of the kids while Lauren is gone as best she can. Although we have no zombies to deal with we do have the ever present ruffians who always surface in a crisis. There seems to be basically two types of people, those who are only trying to protect their own and what they have and then those who don’t have enough and will take what you have. This is the common theme that runs through this genre of books. The writing is well done, the characters well developed and likable especially Josh. There is a follow-up book Solar Winter, but I don’t believe it has been released yet.

Beginning good, midway ok, end disappointing

Beginning description of how an EMP or solar flare would destroy various specific items very good and the only explanation I have heard of exactly what could happen. Beginning also not just another military story, but very thought provoking. Beginning very promising for a good story.

Mid way - mother's attempts to get home and joining with another woman and her young son ok, then devolved into unpleasant storyline.

End - very disappointing, not a prepper story, just icky. Kept listening hoping it would get better as the beginning was so promising, but it did not.

Could be better!

The book at times was good. But the narrator read the book in monotone. It was hard to follow because he would be telling one characters story then the next day second the story was on the next person. Causing you to get lost. He needs to have separation between the characters.

Not complete

I only was able to download 2 chapters. I'm new to Audible and have spent way too much time trying to get the rest of the book. I don't know if I'll be back.

Foul language unnecessary

I usually enjoy what I call "doomsday scenario novels" however the totally unnecessary foul language in this one and taking the Lord's name in vain turned me completely off and I quit listening and deleted it from my audible. I will make sure to only get Christian audio books from now on.
