About this listen

Erik Duvall is half the man he used to be. The war took its toll on him—most noticeably on the right side of his face. He’s scarred, but those scars run more than skin-deep. He’s repulsed by himself and assumes everyone else must be too. That’s why he hides himself away from the world. The only thing that keeps him sane is his music.

He’s a well-known composer in the musical world even though he hoards his compositions close to his heart, refusing to let anyone perform them for fear they won’t do them justice. He tells himself that staying hidden in the shadows and composing music is enough for him, but when he sees Harper Young on the morning news, he suddenly wants like he’s never wanted before. Harper’s pure soprano is like nothing he’s ever heard. She’s an angel in the flesh, and he suddenly knows who he wants to perform his symphony.

But Harper is young and beautiful and everything he’s not. He knows he can’t have her the way he really wants her, so he contents himself with being her teacher.

And it’s enough that she sing for him—only for him.

That’s what he tells himself anyway.

The Heart of the Wounded Hero series was created to pay tribute to and raise awareness of our wounded heroes. Each of the over 80 authors involved have contributed time, money, and stories to the cause. These love stories are inspiring and uplifting, showing the sacrifice of our veterans, but also giving them the happily ever after they deserve.

By increasing awareness through our books, we believe we can in a small part help the wounded heroes that have sacrificed so much.

Thank you for listening!

perfect pitch

It is a sweet story line, touching on the unlikely but still something that dreams can fulfill. Being discovered for musical talent at karaoke. Rare, but it happens. Falling in lust and love with your musical soulmate, despite physical looks. is also realistic. I appreciate these touches of realism. It helps me get engrossed in the story.

The narrator was fine. I have a mixed response to his talent. The speech did not flow smoothly, a bit stilted. However he did a good job with identifying the speaker from their POV.

Lovable Wounded Hero

Erik is a wonderful character! Scars mar his face, so he's a little self conscious about himself. When he hears Harper sing, he knows she's his. Harper's friends record her singing and she's an overnight sensation. Erik offers her singing lessons and they connect in a sweet, steamy way. Erik is a different lead from the author's usual creations and it was fun reading/listening to a different lead from her. Harper is adorable! She stays true to herself and is a wonderful foil to Erik.

I liked the narrator! She differentiated voices quite well and did a wonderful job giving the characters life.

Erik and Harper

Harper (h) performs a song at a karaoke bar that goes viral online, catching the attention of and enthralling Erik, a scarred composer, to the point that he wants to train her and have her sings his compositions. As Harper and Erik spend more time together, there relationship moves from being solely about music, instead encompassing much more. Lovely Phantom-esque romance with a side of hot and steamy action and some minor relationship drama.

I have a soft spot for military

I loved the idea that both were scarred and needed healing in slightly different ways. I loved their dynamics and how their relationship grew.

From the Heart

Erik Duvall was badly scarred during his military service. Now he hides away, avoiding interactions with people and composing his amazing music. Music is the only thing that soothes his heart. When he hears a waitress, Harper Young, whose friends recorded her karaoke singing and posted it, her voice captures him immediately. Will she let him train her voice to sing his compositions? Will she be frightened by his damaged face? Or will she love him for the person he is and help him learn to accept himself through the beauty of his music?

The narrator for the audiobook version is Mackenzie Berry. She does a great job with the voices to make it easy for the listener to get an accurate idea of what each character is like. It helps to set the mood and is an enjoyable way to “read” and enjoy the book.

I Enjoyed It

This was a very sweet yet steamy instalove story about Erik a scarred reclusive composer who fell in love with Harper and her voice when he saw her performing on TV. He becomes not only obsessed but infatuated with her and then he begins to mentor her.

The storyline has a little of a Phantom of the Opera vibe to it but it was still enjoyable, although I would have liked to have learned a little more about Erik's backstory.

The characters are well-drawn and likeable and overall I enjoyed their story which was narrated very well by Emily Ann Meagher.

Scars do not make them

Oh my goodness. My heart broke for these two, they both went through different harsh times in their life and are trying to go on without much success. They are both great characters and mesh together so well. I love Emma's writing style and the narrator did a great job of telling this story.

Both suffered in some way, but together they'd heal.

Such an emotional story, sweet and wonderful. You feel for them and I am so happy they got together. I know he felt less, but he wasn't by any means and she made him really see that. Meeting him warmed her heart and she felt loved again. Another fantastic Emma story.
