Publisher's summary

Cab driver Chet Conway was hoping for a good tip from his latest fare, the sort he could spend. But what he got was a tip on a horse race; which might have turned out okay, except that when he went to collect his winnings, Chet found his bookie lying dead on the living room floor. Chet knows he had nothing to do with it - but just try explaining that to the cops, to the two rival criminal gangs who each think Chet's working for the other, and to the dead man's beautiful sister, who has flown in from Las Vegas to avenge her brother's murder.

Best in a long time

Most enjoyable listen in quite awhile. Fun story, great narration with the right tone and irreverence. Innocent bystander caught up in mystery and murder type story. No politics or anything to break the mood. Anyway, if touting the mood for a good fun easy story I highly recommend.

Good Story and Excellent Author

It’s very rare that the narrator makes the book come alive but Stephen Thorne has pulled it off. He captivated you from start to finish and adds the right touches of humor in the dialogue. I will look for more works from both the narrator and author.

Very entertaining

Very solid murder mystery in a semi-tongue-in-cheek style. First person narrative by cabbie Chet, shortly partnered with sexy blond Abbie. I give very high marks for the lack of gapping plot holes or even tiny ones. All the clues are there for reader to speculate who done it. The writing is lively. No sadistic murders of young women for a welcome change.
Highly recommended.

Get Taken For a Ride!

Classic Westlake with a good job of narration by Thorne. The humor makes this crime caper thoroughly
enjoyable.

Another good yard by Westlake.

Hard case crime rarely disappoints. Another good yarn by Westlake. Stephen Thorne does a great job with Westlake’s Richard Stark Parker series but I liked his performance here even better.

One of Hard Case Crimes Best.

I have read close to 20 Hard Case Crime novels and this one kept my interest all the way through like no other. I did not even come close to figuring this one out. Highly recommend.

Fun, clever mystery

A broke, NY cabbie who hates violence and loves to gamble makes an unlikely hero. I give this 4 stars because it was fun and free to boot.

Very captivating. Entertaining

Even though I figured out who had done the deed, it was amusing. The amount of characters evolved in the 'mob'. Two thumbs up
