About this listen

The critically acclaimed, best-selling author of The Ax and The Hook is back in rare form as he introduces Meehan, a character who keeps the lid from blowing off Washington politics. Meehan, a career thief staring at life without parole, is awaiting sentencing at the Manhattan Correctional Center when he is called to a meeting by someone masquerading as his lawyer. The man, it turns out, represents the presidential reelection campaign committee now finding itself in need of a little professional help. So they outsource Meehan in return for a walk from all pending criminal charges. All he has to do is steal a compromising videotape before the other side springs an October Surprise on the president. A shrewd burglar, Meehan bites - and shows just how easy Watergate would have been had they left it to the professionals.

Classic Westlake

It’s a quick, fun Westlake romp. Basically a Dortmunder without the usual cast of misfits. I’d rather read a Dort but I’ve finished all those. This is a good comedy, light hearted, heist caper.

Fun sendup of political dirty tricks: Watergate was a disaster, so these guys hired a professional thief. What could go wrong

Fun! loved the accurate accents. Good twisty tale, not disturbing or particularly violent. Fun satire of politics dirty tricks, and know it all’s who are white male political operatives.

Watergate per deux!

Francis Meehan, a career thief is awaiting sentencing at the Manhattan Correctional Center, looking at life without parole for hijacking a truck containing U.S. Mail; A federal crime. Unexpectedly, he is called for a visit by someone masquerading as his lawyer. As it turns out, the man is part of the presidential reelection campaign committee. They find themselves in need of a little professional help. If Meehan accepts the job, they will expunge his crime and he will be a free man. They want him to retrieve a damning videotape of the president from a contributor of the opposition. Remember Watergate executed by amateurs? The Campaign Committee does not want to experience this again. Meehan saw his profit when he learned the contributor had an antique gun collection. Getting the prize was one thing, making a profit was another. Not a bad story.

Entertaining and Literate

Full of sly allusions to the Western Canon and nonstop goofs on Hollywood and greed, this witty quest was fun soup to nuts.

Not Westlake at his best, but still fun

The story is surprisingly linear and devoid of complications. and while this is Dortmunder-like, the characters just don't sparkle like those books. Still lightweight fun though.

pleasant story.

started out really clever and seemed really promising, lapsed into story that had few surprises, just marched forward to expected conclusion, but was mildly entertaining so a good read. The surprise ending was not unexpected.
