About this listen

At once a compelling murder mystery and a moving exploration of love and grief, critically acclaimed author Nicola Upson's eighth Josephine Tey mystery is a force to be reckoned with.

In the summer of 1915, the sudden death of a young girl brings grief and notoriety to Charleston Farmhouse on the Sussex Downs.

Years later, Josephine Tey returns to the same house - now much changed - and remembers the two women with whom she once lodged as a young teacher during the Great War. As past and present collide, with murders decades apart, Josephine is forced to face the possibility that the scandal which threatened to destroy those women's lives hid a much darker secret.

That about sums it up--not really bad, not really good. Okay if you have a membership and you want a British mystery, but only because it's included in the membership. It would have been irritating if I'd spent a credit on it. I guess the famous people aspect is part of the appeal, but to me, setting a big chunk of it at Charleston House and putting in Lopokovna, Keynes, Grant and Bell is a cheap way to jazz up the book. Give ordinary names to those characters and to the house and you can see how bland the whole thing is.

The back story on the character is what is intriguing. You truly do not know who is at the heart of this mystery.

what a great story!

This is the first mystery I have read by Nicola Upson. It offered a unique perspective and an unexpected resolution.

Worth a listen

Lovely writing, good characters, decent performance, transparent plot. More about lesbian adolescents coming of age and figuring out who they are, than a mystery. Who did it obvious from the middle of the book, which made the end frustrating.

Underwhelming

I have really enjoyed the Josephine Tey books until now. The narrator sounds mechanical and stilted - no flow to her reading. Won’t be listening to her again.

Awful narration

Excellent book that shows how important the gay rights movement is.
Nicola Upson does a fantastic job at the psychology of people
a few unsatisfactory and unexplained red herrings. I did not like the ending. plus I do not like why Josephine and Marta have such a fragile relationship.

Great performance, very good story!

I wasn’t in the mind-set to read this book. War and complicated female relationships. I didn’t have the patience. FF through most of it, however some women might really enjoy the stop.

This book had me enthralled. What a murder mystery! My Husband and I finished it at 0500 and were up all night listening to it. She just writes a great story and this has been one of the best series I have ever read. Please get this series. You'll love it.

Fabulous!

Beautifully written and read, with complex characters; although most intriguing I found it terribly sad.

Surprising twists and turns

Very depressing. I wish I hadn’t listened. Some stories are better left in the non-fiction category. Then, the reader knows what they’re getting into, when they buy a book
