About this listen

Two men of words...
One seeking only peace.
The other, violence.

Tate Collier, once one of the country's finest trial lawyers, is trying to forget his past. Now a divorced gentleman farmer, land developer, and community advocate in rural Virginia, he's regrouping from some disastrous mistakes in the realms of love and the law. But controversy - and danger - seem to have an unerring hold on Tate. Even as he struggles to rebuild his life, his alter ego is plotting his demise.

Aaron Matthews, a brilliant psychologist, has turned his talents away from curing patients to far deadlier goals. He's targeted Tate; Tate's ex-wife, Bett; and their estranged daughter, Megan, for unspeakable revenge. Matthews, ruthless and hell-bent, will destroy anything that inhibits his plans.

When their daughter disappears, Tate and Bett reunite in a desperate, heart-pounding attempt to find her and to stop Matthews, a psychopath whose gift of a glib tongue and talent for coercion are as dangerous as knives and guns.

Featuring an urgent race against the clock, gripping details of psychological manipulation, and the brilliant twists and turns that are trademark Deaver, Speaking in Tongues delivers the suspense punch that has made this author a best seller. It will leave you speechless.

This one just didn’t work for me.

I love Deaver’s stories and this is the first one I’ve found dubious. Full disclosure, I’m possibly jaded as I am in the mental health profession. Possible spoilers ahead.

The antagonist is a brilliant manipulator, but it’s not that quick or easy to overcome someone’s will no matter how vulnerable they are. For me the characters often came across as stupid. I liked the story overall, but I found myself saying “come on” and throwing up my hands at every turn.

The women in the story are all one dimensional, poor weak willed waifs, who can’t think or act for themselves and need everyone else to validate them. Again, perhaps it’s me, but this one just didn’t do it for me. Give it a try anyway. It isn’t a terrible ride. Enjoy! ☺️

Not one of Deaver’s better books

This was ok, but not particularly good. There was a lot of filler, stretching out a so-so plot. The characters were not very plausible and over all, the book lacked the compelling characters and plotting that usually make Deaver’s books so entertaining.

Lots of actions I didn’t expect

This was an unusual story for me. I believe it had lots of misdirection - actions I didn’t expect like the ending. Looking back on the completed story I enjoyed it very much.

This book hooked me from the beginning! Highly recommend.

I found it fascinating the way the psychiatrist was able to manipulate so many people! I loved both the psychological and criminal aspects of the story. I’m a lover of trials, lawyers, detectives, etc. and this book had them all. I wasn’t a fan of the language, but I could overlook it. And at times it seemed a little far fetched. But over all I found it a fantastic read!

Not Deaver's usual effort

Would you try another book from Jeffery Deaver and/or Ed Sala?

Yes

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

How would girl be rescued.
All the things that happened up to the rescue, just the main characters running around in circles.

Could you see Speaking in Tongues being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, too boring.

Any additional comments?

Probably the worst Deaver book I've ever read. I usually enjoy him a lot.

The twists and turns. Performance also fantastic.

Nothing, I wish he would write faster and more long novels but I will keep listening to his work as it comes.
