About this listen

The number one priority for Bradley Reynolds of Maryland's Organized Crime Taskforce is Andre Hector Federico. The mob boss is old school - a devoted family man, treacherous as hell, and paranoid enough to have escaped Reynolds's sting. Now Reynolds has a new plan: enlist prize-winning crime novelist Alan Seybold to concoct a foolproof chapter-by-chapter scenario on how to lure Federico out of his safe zone and collar him. There's just one condition: Seybold has to play by the rules of real life. Beyond that, the king of best-selling head-turners can have all the fun he wants. But as skilled as Seybold is, even he can't foresee where this thriller is headed - or just how dangerous its plot twists can be.

Surprise Ending was another very entertaining short story from Jeffery Deaver. Along with plenty of action, the characters were well developed and believable. The way this story weaves a fiction author into the police efforts to capture the mob boss was great. Of course, the story has a couple of twists that make the story twice as entertaining. There were places in the story where I knew what was coming, and sure enough I was right, but that’s where the twists show up and derailed my idea of how the story would end. I listened to the audiobook version of Surprise ending and found Grover Gardner’s narration excellent. He gave each character distinct voices as well as doing an excellent job of providing pacing that kept me fully engaged in the story.

A story true to its title!

Jeffery Deaver delivered massively but what amazed me was he did this in a spell-binding short story and it was free. This was by far one of the better-developed plotlines I have read in some time and boy does it have twists! You just never know who the good guys are or who the bad guys are and this book will certainly keep you guessing!

100% recommended 👍

As the name suggests, the ending is the key, really loved how it ended. This is what makes for a good yarn. A very sorry and quick read

Short and sweet, the ending is the key

Great story about a narcissist author who decided to write a book based on a true crime except his story does not have an HEA!

Love this short story!
