About this listen

They thought they could force her to conform. They were wrong.

Inside a dystopian school in the Singularity, the 12-year-old girl known as One Twenty-Four struggles to survive. Failure to conform means death at the hands of her teacher. Assuming her clone sisters don't kill her first.

The Terran Empire has tasked Imperial Marine Lieutenant Grace Tolliver to lead her platoon into the Singularity as a privateer. Her mission: to tear a great bloody strip off their enemies and to take anything that isn't nailed down. The collision of this unlikely pair will change the humanity in ways that no one could predict. If they survive.

Author's note: This novel takes place more than five centuries before the Empire of Bones series, and the events unfolding here have implications there.

What a fun Sci-fi listen.

Yeah I loved it, the bad are really bad no doubt about it. Of course the good have definite shades of gray.
This was one of those included deals on my Audible account. Now I will simply have to buy it to make sure it is permanently in my Audible library.

What a great story line from the bones

I loved this book it brought out a great character from the bones. Background and buildup was a great story with careful planning. Can’t wait to se how this family comes together. Thanks Terry
P.S. I miss Veronica the new narrator is just as good I just like the old one.

YA Story

Easy listening YA story with the voice actress from the Kris Longknife Series. She's really good, making the story an easy listen.
It's a rather simplistic (or typical) young girl coming of age while going through hardships in a Sci Fi setting with Marines, spaceships & of course, some battles ship & groundside. Conveniently she gathers just the protectors she needs & is smarter & stronger than everyone else & fights alongside Marines at 12 yrs old like a pro her 1st time out.
I got it on sale, but had I paid full price I'd not have been happy. I REALLY wish Audible would mark the YA material so I don't accidentally buy them when I don't have lots of time.

Great story, poor narrator

Someone give this lady a pronunciation guide please! Adjutant and route were butchered so often it grated on my nerves! And she pales in comparison to Veronica G who narrated the other series in this universe. I’ll give her one more try for book two before I go to the ebook only with this series.

Very enjoyable story from a different angle

This is a story about women action characters (space Marines), and it's done very convincingly. Dina Pearlman turns in a great performance and the characters really come to life. I enjoyed the story enough that I'll be downloading the sequel.

Exceeded my expectations by many fold

I thought that this would be a good story but one like many others. The story was quite a bit beyond “like many others” and as I listened to it, I told others about things that were happening. I almost never do that. The degree of unforced humor that fit in the context of the situations was great and made it all the more enjoyable. I look forward to the rest of the series.

The narrator did an excellent job. I love it when I know who is speaking from the voice alone. And she was dramatic when it should be and calm and steady when that was right. She put enough empathy into the individuals that I was able to identify with them.

Highly recommend.
