About this listen

Decades ago, Captain Spock had teamed up with David Rabin, the young son of a Starfleet captain, to fight an attempted coup on Vulcan that would have turned the planet's people away from the path of logic. Now a Starfleet officer, Captain David Rabin has been assigned to a harsh desert world much like Vulcan, where the Federation is determined to protect the lives of the inhabitants. But Rabin's efforts are being sabotaged and he has asked for Spock's help against the unknown forces that may well destroy the society he had come to save. While reflecting on his youthful adventure with Rabin, Spock joins him to face an enemy out of their past and confront deadly Romulan treachery. In the process Spock will decide if the path of his life now leads back toward family traditions he had sought once to escape.

Critic reviews

"A dramatic tale, one that answers long-standing questions about Spock's life choices. Fascinating!" (Leonard Nimoy)

A fabulous continuation of the Star Trek universe. Leonard Nimoy’s narration is magnificent and lends great familiarity and gravitas a truly wonderful story.

Star Trek at is literate best

It is a cute story, and I liked it, but the thing I really liked, and the reason I bought it was Leonard Nimoy. I would pay to listen to him read the phone book! I wish that he had done more book narrations while he was alive. I have mostly never been "all broken up" over the death of famous people, but there are three exceptions, for me. David Bowie, Leonard Nimoy, and Neil Armstrong. I really wish all three were still alive. I will miss you for the rest of my life, Mr. Spock!

Well written, gripping and engaging. When read by the late Leonard Nimoy, it almost feels like you are in a Federation dining hall hearing Spock retell the tale from memory! (He doesn't do a bad job mimicking the late DeForrest Kelley, either!)

Total Spock from the Spock perspective

Great story. Excellent presentation. Hearing Leonard Nimoy read a story about the character that made him a household name was an excellent experience.

excellent story

Nice and escapist. Good to hear Nimoy's voice... Read it out of sequence, but that didn't lessen my enjoyment. Enjoy!

Fun & Engaging!

The book itself is very revealing into the motives behind Spock joining Star Fleet. Also, Vulcan interpersonal relationships and prejudices are explored. Hearing a book read by Leonard Nimoy himself, who could go wrong? Unfortunately there are periods of narration where there are sounds like a racketball game is going on in the background. Mr. Nimoy's voice is muffled, and I am distracted by the sound effects. I thought someone was throwing a ball against the house. If you can get passed all the distracting sound in background, then you will be satisfied.

It was so good to hear his voice again. Ever soothing even when narrating this look into Spock's future. LLAP

I miss him still.

Very fun to get immersed in the trek world and Spock's life. It's hard to rate 5 stars because I wish it could have been longer, maybe go a little deeper. But Nimoy's performance is, of course, top notch. Very enjoyable.

A great story, loved hearing Nimoy's narration.

Any additional comments?

I was disappointed by the abridged audio and bought the hardbound book. Much fuller and richer story.
