About this listen
#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon debuts a sweeping new epic saga sure to appeal to her millions of fans!
Deadmen tell their tales . . .
To catch evil, it takes evil. Enter Devyl Bane—an ancient dark warlord returned to the human realm as one of the most notorious pirates in the New World. A man of many secrets, Bane makes a pact with Thorn—an immortal charged with securing the worst creations the ancient gods ever released into our world. Those powers have been imprisoned for eons behind enchanted gates . . . gates that are beginning to buckle. At Thorn’s behest, Bane takes command of a crew of Deadmen and, together, they are humanity’s last hope to restore the gates and return the damned to their hell realms.
But things are never so simple. And one of Bane’s biggest problems is the ship they sail upon. For the Sea Witch isn’t just a vessel, she’s also a woman born of an ancient people he wronged and who in turn wronged him during a centuries long war between their two races—a woman who is also sister to their primary target. Now Marcelina, the Sea Witch, must choose. Either she remains loyal to her evil sister and almost extinct race against Bane and his cause, and watches humanity fall, or she puts faith in an enemy who has already betrayed her. Her people over the totality of humanity—let’s hope Bane can sway her favor.
Deadmen Walking is the first historical fantasy title in New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Deadman’s Cross series. It is a tale of passion and loss, emotions that wound and heal…and ultimate redemption

Story
Brought to us by the Drabs, it was the last thing we expected. But the Drabs knew. They even fought a war over whether or not they should save us. In the end, it was decided that we were diseased insects who were unfit to breathe their air. So they left the human race to die a miserable death of agonizing pain in a matter of months. Left us with no doctors or medicine. Their plan was to rid the earth of us and to take our home as their own. What they never expected was the change that would come after the plague. We didn't all die off as they'd planned.

I wouldn’t say my life is a dumpster fire — but it’s far from typical. I’m frenemies with the local werewolves’ Alpha, my clients are shady as hell, and my magic falls firmly in the WTF category. Mephisto, my mysterious and powerful client, is more interested in my magic than the jobs he’s hired me for. And I’m pretty sure my court-ordered therapist thinks I’m an ass.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Critic reviews
"Graham draws on a seemingly limitless supply of different, growly voices to give life to the members of a demon-hunting crew of undead pirates. ...he easily shifts register and tone, pulling out lilting accents and softer voices for more innocent and vulnerable characters. Overall, his performance is strongest in the passages of dialogue, where his talent with accents gives variety to the interactions." -AudioFile

The stars have always called to Ailis, beckoning her to see what other realms were out there. She's told it's impossible, but that doesn't stop her need to explore beyond what others believe. Ailis never expected to change history by creating the first doorway to another realm. She certainly never imagined opening that door to find a commanding dragon who shifts into a man. She's irresistibly drawn to Lennox, powerless against the yearning of her body and the longing of her heart.

Murder is not her department. It’s not like it used to be. Modern-day grim reapers wear business casual, not black cloaks, and they don’t carry scythes, they work for S. C. Y. T. H. E. (Secure Collection, Yielding, and Transportation of Human Essences), where the Department of Natural Causes is the least exciting gig. And that’s how Kathy Valence likes it: boring and predictable. She has enough stress in her personal life; she’s mid-divorce, pregnant, and terrified she doesn’t have what it takes to be a good mom. Then, she goes to pick up a new client and finds his soul is missing.

But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the 20th century.

A much anticipated book
I have been anxiously awaiting for this book to release and it did not disappoint. While it takes place in the dark hunter world, it is its own story and characters. The narration was peefect for this book. It was an outstanding beginning and I can't wait for the next one!

Pirates Fighting World Eating Evil
This is a fairly typical Kenyon story - there's even a Dark Hunter or two involved. It's got a fair bit of action, lots of very powerful paranormal beings - some of them really nasty - a dark, brooding hero who's been through a lot and a heroine who thinks she hates him, but probably doesn't really. There's a lot of history which probably isn't really necessary to the advancement of the plot, but that kind of world building is to be expected if you're a Kenyon fan and, since it's the beginning of a new series, it may be useful in later stories.
It's impeccably well read although with so many characters, the narrative did, sometimes become a bit hard to follow.
All in all, worthwhile listen, particularly if you're a Kenyon fan.

feels like you're missing a book
there's alot of back story that gets explained and terms you just eventually understand (or think you understand) their meaning. I'm usually a passive listener but this one required focus.

Greatly Enjoyed It
Steeped in myths and legends, this novel got me hooked and not I cannot wait to read about Devyl Bane and Mara. the action scenes were gripping. The romance sweet and a little steamy. and the sheer amount of sass, wit and sarcasm kept me listening.
As for Holter Graham....I love his voice and the way he reads. He is one of my favorite narrators so far.
