Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER One of cherished author Debbie Macomber’s classic novels, this is an enchanting tale of a love that is challenged at every turn.

At a magical Christmas fete, Karen McAlister meets a man she cannot ignore - the first man to interest her in a long while. Before she laid eyes on Rand Prescott, Karen would have said her life was complete and content...much to the dismay of her widowed father, who would love to see her married and settled. But everything changed that enchanted night: The stars, the moonlight, the music, and the champagne all conspired to throw two people together. But the fates are determined to pull them apart.

Long ago, Rand Prescott erected a steel façade around his heart. He never had any intention of maintaining any kind of relationship with a woman. Independent, proud, and nearly blind, Rand felt he had no capacity to return a woman’s love. But that was before he met Karen. In one night, she shattered all of his preconceived ideas about romance and threatened to break through his walls. Rand is convinced that Karen deserves better than the love of a blind man. Can he ever accept this beguiling woman into his life - and into his soul?

“It’s impossible not to cheer for Macomber’s characters.... When it comes to creating a special place and memorable, honorable characters, nobody does it better than Macomber.” --BookPage

This narrator is painful

I hate that we have to review all three items, I love Debbie’s books and I’m so sure the book is great! But the narrator is painful to listen to and I had to stop.

Nothing romantic about this story

I understand old fashioned love stories but this one isn't about love. It's about emotional abuse tolerated and accepted as love. He treats her horribly then is nice to get his sexual needs met, then cold again. It romanticizes a horrible relationship.

Such a disappointment

It’s a good thing that I read that this book was Debbie‘s first book. I’m not even done with it and I am disappointed. Listening to the emotional abuse from this man to the main character, just makes me angry. Why the heck didn’t she leave him? If this was the first time I had ever read of any of Debbie’s books, I wouldn’t read anymore. Thankfully later books are not like this. It’s kind of amazing that her career continue to grow.

Narrator was a distraction for me.

There appeared to be a lisp with the letters s and sh words. It proved to be a distraction.

Blah and old fashioned. `

I got so angry with the meek women in this story. I love Debbie's books, but this one made me angry at every turn. The men talked to the women like they were dogs.

What part of this story is romantic? What century was this supposed to be, the renascence?!

No Way

If you are strong minded woman this book is going to piss you off. The mental abuse had me going nuts. The HEA was to quick for the hell he put her through. No way will I ever finish a book like this again.

Archaic

Storyline is archaic. It seems the woman in this book agrees with tricking a man into marrying her. I don’t agree with this and I found it offensive. I can’t get on board with a woman who would resort to such tactics. I finally stopped about 2/3 of the way through because I couldn’t support the main
character.

If you like stories about abusive relationships

I am really disappointed in this current book by Debbie Macomber. Why anyone would stay with a man who is verbally and emotionally abusive is beyond me.
