About this listen
As a Retriever, Wren Valere specializes in finding things gone missing - and then bringing them back, no questions asked. Normally her job is stimulating, challenging and only a little bit dangerous. But every once in a while....
Case in point: A cornerstone containing a spell is stolen and there's a magical complication. (Isn't there always?) Wren's unique abilities aren't enough to lay this particular case to rest, so she turns to some friends: a demon (minor), a mage who has lost his mind, and a few others, including Sergei, her business partner (and maybe a bit more?).
Sometimes what a woman has to do to get the job done is enough to give even Wren nightmares....

Story
The name's Torres, Bonnie Torres, and I'm a paranormal scene investigator - rooting out the truth about crimes of magic. It's dangerous and boring and scary and fascinating. Though not everyone in the Cosa Nostradamus is happy we're around, which can make things…tricky. Working two cases - looking into a murder for the NYPD, and a rich man's break-in - should be well within our abilities. But when things start getting weird in the Electric Apple, Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations is stretched to the limits, trying to keep one step ahead and out of trouble.

Story
In my time with PUPI, formally known as Private, Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations, I've seen a lot. Learned a lot. And not all of it's been good. But what we do - make people accountable for crimes committed with magic - is important work. Still. Even I need to take a break every now and again. Or so I've just been told (ordered). So hey, vacation. Maybe I'll finally figure out what's going on with the "special bond" between me and the boss man, Benjamin Venec. Venec seems to like that idea - he's invited me down to join him on a jaunt to Philly. But no sooner do I arrive in the City of Brotherly Love than we're called in to look at a dead body.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Hungry darkness, haunted guns, tunnels that move like snakes—the crystal mines of Medicine Rocks, Montana, are a place only the bravest and greediest dare. Discovered in 1866, the miraculous rock known as crystal quickly rose to become the most expensive substance on the planet, driving thousands to break the treaties and invade the sacred buffalo lands of the Sioux. But mining crystal risks more than an arrow in the chest. The beautiful rock has a voice of its own. A voice that twists minds and calls unnatural powers. A voice that turns men into monsters.

Story
Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent. The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, Godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. But Elantris fell...10 years ago.

First published in 1989 and taking place in downtown Toronto, one of the earliest of the modern urban fantasies, Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light is the story of a fight against encroaching darkness by a developmentally handicapped young woman, a street musician with no idea of his potential, a bag-lady who's tired of picking up the pieces, and an adept of the light. Mixing actual Toronto ghost-stories with traditional Faire, a police procedural, and a cat, Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light opened a gate at street level to the urban fantasy that followed.

"Investigation, Mediation, Vindication." That's how the Yellow Pages ad starts, and if it sounds like the sort of thing a drunk teenager might come up with . . . well, you'd only be wrong about the teenager part. John Smith owns San Diego's smallest private investigation firm, but he doesn't know the first thing about mediation. Or vindication.

Great Urban Fantasy!
I am delighted to see the first book of the retriever series here at Audible! This is great urban fantasy with a well crafted other world co-existing with ours. The magic is called "current" because it's like electricity and is attracted to electricity. The Wren uses her talent for current as well as agility to retrieve lost items. This time, she's sent after a stolen cornerstone of a building. The owners want the cornerstone, along with the protective spell it contains, back.
This is a multifaceted story full of interesting characters. There's a lot of humor too as the different worlds interact. I love PB and how ordinary people completely miss seeing a short, furry black & white demon in a trench coat!
There are currently 5 retreiver novels. Hopefully Audible will get all 5!

Good book, bad reader
The tone of the reader's voice didn't fit the darkness of this story! This is a relatively dark urban fantasy, and the reader's voice always sounded either like she was laughing or like she was asking a question--it just didn't fit. I ended up buying the paperback just so that I could read the rest of the story (I got about an hour into the audio) without the irritation of the reader!

Harlequin and their music 😑
I enjoyed this story fairly well. But gosh dang it! I loath the terrible music harlequin insists on using. Not to mention the irritation of the the freaking harlequin commercial in the middle. Putting the music over the beginning of the reading is crazy distracting and makes difficult to understand the narration. The awfulness of the music itself is just adding insult to injury. Dear Harlequin, I’ve never chosen books because I heard the publishers name more frequently in the audiobook, but now I’m considering NOT listening to a book because I know that stupid, badly timed music intro/exit/commercial will be there

Readable book, Wrong Narrator.
I read this book in paperback maybe 3 years ago and liked it well enough to buy the rest of the series, so looked forward to hearing it in Audible.
Mistake. The book narrated here seems like a different book then the one on paper. The narration makes that much difference.
The reader sounds like she is 15 years old and reads the book as if it were a slightly amusing fairy tale - totally wrong for the book. In fact, the book is actually trivialized by the childish tone. It is hard to remember the characters are adults and the situations are dangerous. Murder, bullying, and racism sound more like high school hijinks when read by a child. Half way through the book it is mentioned that the story is set in New York. I was surprised because the tone of the reader had led me forget and assume it was Seattle. That is a sample of how much the book suffers from selecting a childish voice.
(The narrator is actually good, for children's books.)
The book was produced by Harlequin so apparently they think the teenage market would enjoy this voice. Adults will be looking for other entertainment. And the author will lose business.

I was lost for quite some time
When I first started listening to this book, I was lost. I wondered if this book was a branch of another series. Well, as the book kept going, I started to enjoy it and I will commit to finishing the series. I enjoyed the music in the story and the narrator. The only reason I gave this book 3 stars, is due to not knowing what was going on. This was also my first paranoral/fantasy romance.

Good first book.
This was a good first book in a new (to me) paranormal series. I don't think the writing was amazing and it took me a minute to figure out what was going on sometimes. The concept was slightly refreshing. I still feel it was solid enough that I will probably pick up the next one to try.

bad narration
So I took a chance on this book. I can't even get past the first half. The narrator's voices sound too similar for each character, so I have no idea who is supposed to be talking half the time. I just cant get into the book b/c I cant figure out who's talking half the time and the story will jump around to the point of view of another character. There wont be a pause or anything to signify this complete change, so I just got confused. I may just buy the paperback and read it like Sarah suggests. I didnt have a problem with the narrator being more bubbly.. just had a problem with 2 of the main characters having almost identical voices.

narrator makes it impossible to listen
I like the author and suspect I would enjoy the story. However, the narrator: speaks very quickly; has no character voices whatsoever; and mispronounced several words. I am unable to get engaged with the story despite 5 tries. Unfortunate.

I couldn't get past the reader's voice
There is obviously a market for this series of novels otherwise there wouldn't be a series of novels. For me, I just didn't see the appeal. I think most of the problem was the narrator. She sounds like a pre-teen girl. I have to wonder if someone in a position of power forced their daughter on the company that turned the novels into audio books. The book is intended for urban fantasy enthusiasts. The story is somewhat dark in tone. There are demons, wizards and all kinds of interesting things populating the story. I personally didn't care for the magic system created by the author. Still, I would have gotten over that and got into the story if not for the narrator. I actually might have been able to get past her childish voice if the tone and style of her narration fit the darkness of the story. Basically, everything was too perky, too bright. The narration simply was completely in the wrong tone for the story. This narrator should only be doing young children's books or Pee Wee's Playhouse. It's a shame, because maybe the novel was actually good, but I just couldn't get into it well enough to tell. Better to read this author's works and not listen to any audio of them. Save your credit.
