When magic goes wrong, who are you going to call?

The name's Torres, Bonnie Torres, and I'm a paranormal scene investigator - rooting out the truth about crimes of magic. It's dangerous and boring and scary and fascinating. Though not everyone in the Cosa Nostradamus is happy we're around, which can make things…tricky.

Working two cases - looking into a murder for the NYPD, and a rich man's break-in - should be well within our abilities. But when things start getting weird in the Electric Apple, Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations is stretched to the limits, trying to keep one step ahead and out of trouble. Add in rumors of a powerful creature gunning for us and it's not just our rep on the line this time - if we don't solve this case, everyone will suffer.

Fortunately, around here, when the going gets weird, the weird hire us.…

Editorial reviews

This paranormal thriller takes on another level of intrigue with veteran narrator Romy Nordlinger giving a sharp performance. Her cool voice picks up the subtleties in Laura Anne Gilman's third book from her Paranormal Scene Investigations series, and drives this complex thrill ride to its surprising conclusion. Bonnie Torres is a paranormal investigator working her way up the ranks at the PUPI, when she is called on to lend assistance to the NYPD. What starts out as just one more case of murder, quickly takes a turn for the weird. Tricks of the Trade is another great chapter in Laura Anne Gilman's electrifying world of magic and adventure.

Nice tricks

It's been a bit of time since I've read a book from this series and I am sad it's taken me this long to get back to the characters, setting and premise and superb story.
A bit simile laden, but 99.9% of the time it's perfect and necessary. There was only a teeny nth that felt forced like it was expected. The rest of the time, I could actually get the sense of what was occurring. Because it's audio, I don't have specific quotes to show, my brain loved it at the time but did not retain other than the feeling I was supposed to get.
A highly enjoyable story and I look forward to visiting again. Definitely more quickly than between last visit and this.
I can absolutely recommend this book, series, and author. Off to upload more to my Audible library.

Magical world meets CSI

I love the integration of scientific and logic based thought processed characters with magic in the real world. New York City, home to the varied and weird anyway really comes alive with this imagined magical undercurrent.

Narrator makes a lot of mistakes

She mispronounces so many words: ether, tarry, even extra special! It's really annoying and occasionally confusing. She also places emphasis in the wrong place, so you have to redo the sentence in your head. It's like no one listened to her as she was reading, and she never did any second takes.

I enjoy the series, but if I didn't get this and the first book free, I wouldn't have kept listening.

Ok, quite interesting. It's third book in series, but audible is failed to mark it so, unfortunately

Such a treat

Any additional comments?

While I am not new to Laura Anne Gillman’s writing, I overlooked the PUPI series until after the fourth book was released. Finding/noticing a great series late is always a wonderful indulgence for me. I can dive into the new series and spent time really listening to the characters and following their growth over a number of books without getting frustrated by the seemingly long wait for a new installment—ehm, ehm, George R. R. Martin (cue the awkward silence). Sometimes, a binge on a new series will leave me never wanting to think about that series again (i.e., Divergent and Hunger Games), but the PUPI series does not wear out its welcome after such gluttonous behavior. If you like paranormal crime, you will enjoy this series and this narrator.

mediocre narration for a bad story

the worldbuilding was decent but the characters were forgettable and the story predictable. I literally can't remember a single character name or personality trait. The plot was boring for 95 percent of the book and the ending was unsatisfying. The world could have been enjoyable if it had been given to writer that had skill.
