About this listen

The long awaited prequel to the award-winning Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer series that started with the best-selling military fantasy book Stiger's Tigers.

A nobleman from an infamous family, Ben Stiger finds himself freshly assigned to Third Legion, Seventh Company as a lowly lieutenant in the opening stages of war between the Empire and the Kingdom of the Rivan. Third Legion has been tasked with pursuing a retreating Rivan army back to the border where the Empire can take the fight into enemy territory. However, a major obstacle stands in Third Legion's path: the river Hana. The crossing is sure to be contested and dangerous. Should Third Legion fail to force a crossing, the entire campaign could grind to a disastrous halt.

This is Stiger's first military appointment. Inexperienced, young and unsure of himself, Stiger is ostracized by his fellow lieutenants. Worse, he's been placed under the command of an incompetent officer. With life and reputation on the line, he must learn to understand men far beneath his station and lead them into battle. Stiger struggles not only against the enemy, but against his family's history and his own side to prove himself worthy of serving the empire he loves and earning the respect of the men he leads.

Set amidst the backdrop of an epic war, there are greater forces at work than the young Stiger can even begin to imagine, setting him on the dangerous and lonely path of destiny.

Note: This is a prequel novel. To avoid unwanted surprises or spoilers, it is recommended to begin the series with Stiger's Tigers, Book 1 of the Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer series. However, if that sort of thing does not bother you, feel free to dive in and enjoy the adventure.

Excellent mash up Roman Legion & low fantasy

Marc Edelheit is a super writer- this is actually the first book in the prequel series to Stiger's Tigers. A super tale with excellent narration by Steven Brand that centers around the maturation and exploits of a young legionary officer Stiger. Set in a fictional world Ithros empire that mimics the Roman Empire Stiger must overcome many obstacles on his way to becoming the hardened Legionary leader he is later in the Series. Excellent description of tactics used by the Romans. Who are the Rivan (their enemies) modeled after? Well not the Parthians (that I can tell) nor the Persians (that I could tell). That is the question that I want answered! Well done!

Great historical detail (exactly like the Romans)

Better than expected

I have 2 issues with this,

1. the lack of difference in voices for characters
2. the length is short

Its a nice story and as someone listening to the prequl first, it's a good starting point so far. I got lost in this book while at work, it made the time fly by. it's why I wish it was longer, lucky for me there are more books. The character development so far is great and I hope it gets better. For the narrator pretty much having the same voice for everyone is kinda a let down, but I honestly didn't mind for this book just because of how good the story is. It also help the narrator has a nice voice

What did you love best about Stiger?

I thought that the story was good, but it was short, even too short more like a short story than a book. I finished it in less than a day.

What did you like best about this story?

The development of the character Stiger too place so fast because the author was trying to push the pace I thought that he could've taken a bit more time to show how he became Stiger the leader of the Tigers.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Brand?

I was initially disappointed whenever I had downloaded it and it was done by Elizabeth, and was about to return the book but I checked it again today and it’s been redone by Steven. I think his voice, tone and inflections are prefect for the changes that take place. I didn’t like how Elizabeth had that same tone for everyone. With Steven I could start listening from anywhere I know Stiger, from another character which I like. Long answer, but he's prefect for it.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

From the ashes of Rome comes Stiger leader of the 7th

Any additional comments?

next time keep Steven brand from the start and a little more development on the story.

So it begins...

To be up front and honest, this is my genre. Romans, conquest, and drinking. That being said, this isn't a classic...it's the book that classics study and then they feel inadequate. I despise the antagonist and I fear for the protagonist. Is it possible for a book to accomplish more?

Awesome

Another near perfect book about Stiger. I spent a third of the book yelling at the phone, why wasn't Stiger passing up the critical info?! Oh well, it was well done, as they all are!
