About this listen

Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing, and Dying is Ram Dass' reflection on the joys, pains, and opportunities that appear as we age. In 1997, Ram Dass suffered a nearly incapacitating stroke that affected his speech and movement. Over the next two years, he worked to regain his damaged capacities. From this experience he has produced a timely and thoughtful book that touches an important contemporary issue - our fears and apprehension about aging.

In the 1960s Ram Dass was a Harvard professor who turned to Eastern religion to answer the questions troubling his generation. He shared his story in the landmark classic, Be Here Now, which instantly captured the spiritual longings of his contemporaries. In Still Here, Ram Dass once again brings understanding, common sense, and reassurance for those of us facing the final season of life.

Thank you RD!!

Truly enjoyed. The voice recording reading the book was wonderful. I almost forgot it wasn’t ram dass’ voice. It was kinda of cool actually!

This book gave me many moments to ponder what i think about death. Where my fears lie... and allowed me to begin to put shape to them. So I can move with them. Never before have I been able to eloquently put my fears into a precise package. Grateful to have stumbled on this!!

Well worth listening to

I really enjoyed this book. The book relates spiritual concepts to the subject of aging very well. The viewpoint throughout is very positive, even the section on death. Ram Dass is a unique voice among American spiritual teachers....if you have read him before you will enjoy this, if not it might be better to start with one of his earlier books.

Good to listen while quarantined alone

I found it comforting to listen to this book while trying to be at peace with the loneliness I felt as I quarantined alone at age 70. I will likely listen to it again as I found it comforting.

Just what I needed

I don’t know what is more amazing to me;
How much this book has helped me,
Or how a former work mate knew it was just what I needed.

Wise insight into the process of aging

Overall, I liked this and found it interesting and helpful. Ram Dass was a great public speaker and so it's unsurprising that the narration of this book was very well done.

There was a lot of good stuff in here, for example: his discussion of the mortal ego (who we THINK we are) and the eternal soul (the Atman/ witness/ consciousness).

There were also a few huge leaps of logic that did weaken the book a little for me. For example, he says that there must be a reason for life or what's the point of it? But that's not really how reasoning works. Not everything has to have a point.

Nevertheless, a good book, I'm glad to have read it.

I love Ram Das

This is very fitting for me now. The walk towards death is not talked about like he talks about it. Ram Das is comforting.

STROKE SURVIVORS A MUST LISTEN

As a stroke survivor, i understood exactly what was being said. however if you are approaching an elderly status...coming to terms with it, this listen is also extremely helpful, it does somewhat rely on a specific belief system that may contradict yours . if you can bypass that, by all means please do so. you will find a "pearl" for your personal growth. As a christian..i still received much value. i may add i did read ram dass books in my teens so he is not new to me. this was so good for me ..helping me to make sense out of a horrific stroke that nearly took my life.
