About this listen

When an antique bridal quilt appears under mysterious circumstances at the vintage clothing shop where Rachel Grant works, she is fascinated. She has never been able to resist handmade textiles from the past, for she believes that through the ages, women wove protective magic into their fabrics in order to mark the important events of their lives: birth, marriage, and death.

But there is more than good in the quilt's magic power. Day by day Rachel sees and feels the power growing, as she senses the quilt influencing her thoughts and actions. Much as Rachel's logical mind longs to deny the supernatural, the aura of evil coming from the quilt is terrifyingly real, and it seems to carry a sinister legacy into the lives of the people Rachel loves.

Critic reviews

"Besides offering a riveting mystery, Michaels also introduces readers to the interesting business of restoring period clothing" (School Library Journal)

to much. to many character and things. I did enjoy the history portion. I felt some things did not have a conclusion.

Disjointed

Barbara Michaels excels at the romantic ghost story and in this book she performs to expectation. A graduate student; a handsome man; a beautiful, but disturbing quilt; and a vengeful ghost all tie together into a diverting and enchanting narrative.

A neat knot of a mystery

Interesting little story. No surprises but it was a cute store.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Restore at least some of the text; this was so brutally abridged that much of the character development, interesting detail and background that make Michaels' books so easy to get lost in is missing, leaving huge, gaping holes.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Since this is a romance novel, supernatural background aside, the happy ending is hardly a surprise and isn't really meant to be. And you don't need to be a genius to figure out the "mystery," Michaels having obligingly provided plenty of hints; the interest is in how the characters go about figuring it out.

Any additional comments?

When you read the book, the awkwardness and stiffness of some of the dialogue isn't really intrusive, but listening to a performance of it seem to emphasize the problem. I love Michaels' books for the background, and sadly most of it was abridged to death - this also makes the weakness of the dialogue more obvious. Prefer the novel to the audiobook in this case!

"Abridged" is an understatement

I wish I hadn't spend extra $$ during a sale to download this disappointment. Choppy writing, rough scene changes, unbelievable changes in characters from chapter to chapter, the writing is bad. The narration was annoying - a phrase ion nearly every pareagraph uttered in dark sinister tones.

Lame story narrated like a tv soap opera

I listened to this audio book years ago and fell in love with the story and Barbara Rosenblatt's narration. I was so excited to see it available at Audible.com that I downloaded it without realizing it is the abridged version. So much is lost in this abridgement. The story is wonderful and should be available in its entirety.

Why abridged when Books on Tape has it unabridged
