About this listen

Once, a witch made a pact with a devil. The legend says they loved each other, but can the story be trusted at all? Find out in this lush, atmospheric fantasy novel that entwines love, lies, and sacrifice.

Long ago, a village made a bargain with the devil: To ensure their prosperity, when the Slaughter Moon rises, the village must sacrifice a young man into the depths of the Devil's Forest. Only this year, the Slaughter Moon has risen early.

Bound by duty, secrets, and the love they share for one another, Mairwen, a spirited witch, Rhun, the expected saint, and Arthur, a restless outcast, will each have a role to play as the devil demands a body to fill the bargain. But the devil these friends find is not the one they expect, and the lies they uncover will turn their town - and their hearts - inside out.

Spooky creative story

I was surprised by the twists and the voice acting was great, I am excited to listed to her in other projects. My critics come from the character names just bugged me so much I almost stopped listening and one of the main characters name was said to be Rhun and in the recording the choice was to read the name at Reem and it was killing me inside.

A spooky story with heart and lovely prose

I really enjoyed this book! It's surprising to me that there are so few reviews here. This was a personal favorite of the books I've listened to this year.

Off the bat I was struck by how lovely the prose is. Places and things are described with care and attention. It felt nice to let the narration wash over me while I was working; the author obviously cares about details of things like plants, clothing and fabric, architecture. I appreciated how solid the world itself felt even when at times I couldn't entirely grasp the rules of that world.

I read the book in the middle of spring but this felt like the perfect autumn read, it's a little creepy and a little haunted. The three protagonists absolutely brighten up the place, but their love story is nestled inside a ghost story. When the book ended I found myself hoping for more time with the characters. I assume this is a standalone book but I'd love to check in on them in 5 or 10 years and see how they're faring.
