About this listen

“Susi Holliday is one of our best and most original creators of tense and twisty tales.”—Ian Rankin

Three people live. Three people die. You make the choice.

Like any mother, Chrissie wants to protect her family. She would do anything to keep them safe. So when a mysterious stranger turns up at her door, offering to prevent the deaths of the people she loves, it sounds too good to be true. The only problem: she must choose someone to die in their place. A substitute.

When her daughter Holly has a terrible accident, Chrissie has no option but to enter the programme. In that horrifying moment, she would do anything to save her. But even after Holly makes a miraculous recovery, Chrissie is convinced it’s just a coincidence. After all, who can really control the laws of life and death?

But as the dangers to her family escalate and her chosen substitutes begin to disappear, Chrissie finds herself in an underworld of hidden laboratories and secretive doctors. And the consequences of playing by their rules are far deadlier than she ever imagined…

I can see this happening in real life.

You know, this wasn't that far-fetched and I wouldn't be surprised if something like this really existed. For all we know, they're still in the trial phases or it's already been implemented and it's only a matter of time before someone goes rogue, all hell breaks loose, and we all find out about it. I enjoyed this book but unlike Chrissie, I would've had a much harder time picking the substitutes.

Great performance by all & storyline, Five stars

I liked the story. It was fast-paced and kept my attention. I usually do not read things that might seem far-fetch or scientific. However, it was far from that; I thought that with medicine forever evolving, something like this could happen one day. I am glad I stayed with it to the end. All the narrators kept me engaged in the storyline, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Glad I stuck with the book! I look forward to hearing more from her.

Sci-fi with a bit of mystery!

Honest Thoughts 💭

I am not into sci-fi and it’s quite difficult for me to actually enjoy this kind of reading.

Nevertheless, this was easy to follow and well paced. I always love a good audiobook with a good performance!

If you’re looking for secrets formulas and hidden laboratories…experimental science and research and a bit of magic, this novel will keep you engaged.

After all, what are we willing to do to avoid grief…

DNF - annoying narrator

The story might be interesting, but the narration ruins the book. The child’s voice is so cringey and high pitched that I had to stop listening before it affected my ears…so annoying!!
