About this listen

Power, money, and dark family secrets are a killer combination in a propulsive novel of suspense by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of Family Money.

After Jake Slater’s wife dies in a tragic hit-and-run, all he has left is his daughter, Piper—nearly lost, too, in a brutal custody battle with his wealthy in-laws. A year later, Jake reluctantly agrees to a reunion with the estranged family for Piper’s thirteenth birthday. Then a single gunshot rings out, and a new nightmare begins.

Piper is kidnapped, and her cousin Caitlin is murdered. Caitlin’s cryptic dying words: Piper knows the truth. Jake is the only witness to the murder—and the only suspect. For an innocent man trapped in a world conspiring to crush him, the only way to clear his name and find Piper is to do it on the run.

Crucified by the media, pursued by the FBI, and hunted by an assassin, Jake can feel his desperation escalating with every tick of the clock. The closer he gets to the truth, the more he risks uncovering family betrayals so sinister they’re worth killing for.

Be prepared to suspend reality

because Chad Zunker requires you to do that way too many times. Works of fiction often have moments when that is necessary to advance the plot but in this case Zunker over does it. And he exacerbates the problem by going into lengthy explanations to try to explain the character’s behavior. Better works of fiction take you there through vivid descriptions of scenes and characters that leave you believing you might make the same choice or decision. I enjoyed the book despite those flaws. It is easier to be a critic than a writer.

It really kept me guessing

All the twists and turns kept each part interesting. Rich characters you love and ones really easy to hate

Good story..worth a listen.

I liked listening to this. Sometimes with this genre I get a little confused with so many characters but this story had just the right amount to keep it on track and entertaining and not make me lose focus. Good enough character building to make even the hated characters have some redeeming qualities. I liked the ending was what I hoped for. It didn’t have any parts that I did an eye roll or were totally unbelievable.

Fast paced

This was.a.quick read.and listen. If it were a movie it would require a.lot.of.stuntmen. It also required more suspension of belief than I'm happy with, but the good story almost made up for that. Our hero was a very good guy with his priorities straight who could think really fast on his feet, and got very lucky a time or three. Which is good, cause he tended to be in the wrong place at the right time and kept getting blamed for.stuff! The bad guys...there were at least 2 of em, 1 was.very, very stupid and the other was very very rich! There was a very small part of the book dedicated to a.love story. Is it a spoiler to.say all's well that ends well? I rather think not, since I had the assumption through the whole book that this would be true.
Narration was decent, and I both read and listened to the book in just a few days in spare time and driving time. Nice entertainment.

Wow. Not His Best.

I like this author a lot. He generally writes a very tight plot with great characters. While the characters here were well done, I had an issue early on in the story that I just couldn't shake, and it took some of the fun out of this one.

The very premise for the story, basically, just didn't hold water for me. That's pretty odd, because anyone who enjoys this genre knows there is some suspension of belief on the reader's part so that we can enjoy these great stories. But I just couldn't see myself, if I were in the position of the main character, choosing to do what he did at the beginning of the book. Sorry, but I can't really define that better without spoilers.

Since I couldn't relate to the pivotal action taken by the main character, the rest of his decisions just didn't mean much to me, either. For me, this one goes down as good, but not great. I know this author is capable of better things- I've read and enjoyed them.

Move out of Jake's way!

Jake is a man on a mission, especially after losing his wife in a car accident, and now, his daughter has been kidnapped. Don't get in his way!
